GeneralMary moonlights by drumming in D'astro. Ste moonlights by singing in Cowtown.
MusicThe Fall, Pavement, Shellac, Herman Dune, Velvet Underground, Beachbuggy, Stereolab, Captain Beefheart, Pet Shop Boys, Black Sabbath, early pj Harvey, Gallon Drunk, Deerhoof, Scott Walker, Chinese Stars, Ventures, Truman's Water assorted soul and disco of the 60s and 70s. It has occurred to me that this list is not sufficiently obscure to make us sound cool so here's some more. See if you can guess which ones I made up: Bilge Pump, Cleckhuddersfax, David Broughton, Quack Quack, Vialka, Beards, Printed Circuit, the Stain Removers, Calvin Johnson, Frank Sidebottom, Apatt, Jack and the Flaps, Mucky Sailor, Judas Priest, Grabba Grabba Tape, I Can't Believe It's Not Better, Lords, Half Man Half Biscuit, Frogs die in hot spas, Goblin.
MoviesI saw a good one called 'The Tingler' which has got Vincent Price in. He was trying to extermininate the aforementioned creature which looks a bit like a lobster, but is detered by the sound of screaming. It tries to get you when you're asleep. No one else seems to have seen it though, so I think I may have imagined it. The following are also good: Consequences Of Love, American Movie, Billy Liar, Brazil.
TelevisionChucklevision, Henry's Cat, original Star Trek.
BooksKurt Vonnegut and Bukowski are good. Ste likes William Burroughs, but ultimately I reckon you're best sticking with 'The Twits' by Roald Dahl. That way at least if someone asks you what it's about you might be able to give them a reasonable answer.
HeroesHeroes have a nasty habit of disappointing you. They generally turn out to be wife-beaters or scientologists. In the worse cases they release vile solo singles in the 80s - that means you Fergal Sharkey!

About me:
This page has no music on it because I wasn't smart enough to sign us up as a band and they won't let us change. We've set up another page though, which you can get to by clicking Pifco in our top friends, which has some tunes on. Pifco are a two piece from Leeds consisting of Stephen/Ste (guitar, vocals) and Mary (drums, keyboards). We like to make a noisy racket in our cellar and then inflict it on the general public whenever possible. We are named after the manufacturer of fine electrical products so don't tell them in case they decide to sue. In the event of this scenario we may have to change it to 'Ronco'. We like playing gigs of a DIY bent - none of that crap with a ticklist on the door. We also like Oz the TV series, making collages out of cardboard, and attractive knitwear. Forthcoming gigs: 23rd April at the Packhorse, Leeds
Who I'd like to meet:
Mary: Illya Kuryakin, Sheriff John Burnell I'd imagine that Ste would probably like to meet Steve Albini but might be too scared.

Damo Suzuki is a legend! Best known for his stint as the legendary Krautrock pioneers Can as their singer in the 70s, Damo now tours the world to hook up with the best of local musicians to produce stunning sets of improvised music. We cannot stress how good this will be enough - you’ve never experienced anything like a Damo Suzuki show before, even if you’ve been to a Damo Suzuki show before! This extra special show will see Damo backed by the collective brilliance that is Quack Quack and Napoleon IIIrd.

Quack Quack simply the best live band Forest of Sound have ever seen - so much energy, so much musical invention, so much skill... well, it's almost obscene.

One man empassioned alt-pop legend with his reel-to-reel tape player, Napoleon IIIrd is a man of skewed melodies, bouncing beats and a big bucket of inventiveness... and is simply ace.

Friday: 13/3/2009 @ The Brudenell, Leeds. Doors 7.30pm.
A Forest of Sound presentation. £6 adv / £7 on the door.
Tickets available at Jumbo Records, Crash Records, and We Got Tickets.

Forest of Sound

Feb 24 2009 1:47 PM

Charlie Parr is from the same Duluth music scene that spawned the likes of Low and Haley Bonar, and his music delves deep into the back roads of American folk music, there’s hints of Robert Johnson, Nick Drake and Will Oldham in his playing, and a true from the heart power and clarity that is simply stunning. This guy is the real thing, and you can hear it in every note he plays, which would also explain why the people at the superb End of the Road festival ask him back every single year!

Neil McSweeney plays beautifully considered and perfectly restrained music that will delight fans of Low, Adrian Crowley, Nina Nastasia, Mark Kozelek, and Jason Molina.

Deftly fingerpicked folk loveliness from a local favourite - Michael Rossiter perfectly executes traditional folk as well as his own material, sings from his heart and gets the perfect sound from his guitar.

Sunday: 1/3/2009 @ The Packhorse, Leeds. Doors 8pm.
A Forest of Sound presentation in association. £5 adv / £6 on the door.
Tickets available at Jumbo Records, Crash Records, and We Got Tickets.
Weirdo Guise

WEIRDO GUISE PRESENT...

Wavves Straight outta California on their first ever tour. You’ll feel like a frisky 19 year at some awesome beach party as their blown-out, catchy as hell pop washes into your ears. Touring as a duo, but really the brainchild of some 22 year old, you’ll find Wavves records out on De Stijl, Tic Tac Totally and Woodsist. There’s some Doo Wop, JAMC, No Age stuff going on here.
Pens Three young girls outta London, who have a real knack for writing total tunes. On tour with Wavves, they also have an LP coming out the on De Stijl in the US following a sold out tape and 7″. Easily one of the best new UK bands.
Mazes So the new crop of UK bands are here, fitting with all the killer stuff coming out of America right now and these kids have gone and written some of the best songs of the whole bunch. As well as all that stuff and some Pavement, they’ve also got an ear open to the likes of Swell Maps and Television Personalities. From Manchester, this will be their first show.
Hipshakes Fastest, trashest band you’ll ever see. From their chaotic live show, you’ll just make out some real snappy pop gems under their tinnitus triggering wall of guitar noise. Just out of their teens and have already released an LP - with a 2nd on the way and 8 7″ singles, one on the Black Lips own label, another on an Oblivians Goner imprint - yeah they’re a Garage Punk band!

Hauschka
Having studied classical piano for ten years, Dusseldorf-based pianist/composer Volker Bertelmann's work as Hauschka is based upon a playful exploration of the possibilities of the 'prepared' piano. His resulting tracks are vivid, unconventional pieces made in a spirit of playful research-enthusiasm, which he's taken around the world - in the USA with Múm, in Japan with Colleen, and a debut, sold-out London show with Max Richter. Hauschka's music is a thing of beauty - intertwined melodies and rythyms that flit between gorgeously lush and complex and stunning minimalism.

Gareth S. Brown
With influences as diverse as Eastern European folk music, funeral marches and jewellery boxes, Gareth creates gorgeous work of layered beauty with nods towards Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Michael Nyman as well as latter day travellers such as Max Richter, Yann Tiersen and Aphex Twin.

For this Forest of Sound we’re getting together with our good friends at Misplaced Music to celebrate the release of Gareth S.
Brown’s new album, The Gallows on Misplaced Music (order here).

Bracken makes simply stunning music - walls of ambient sound, dark dub bass and atmospheres, destroyed and re-claimed found sound, beats that range from over-powering to perfectly understated.

Gareth S. Brown creates gorgeous work of layered beauty with nods towards Philip Glass, Terry Riley and Michael Nyman as well as latter day travellers such as Max Richter, Yann Tiersen and Aphex Twin.

Sketches for Albinos makes a sound that manages to be both truly heartfelt and organic, but also encompassing the majestic glacial soundscapes that would make the likes of Tim Hecker or Fennesz proud.

The Declining Winter are a new musical project, led by Richard Adams, the co-founder of Domino Records group Hood, and is influenced by the music of Low, The Durutti Column, Songs of Green Pheasant and more. They have recently toured with ambient legends, Stars of the Lid. Live they’re a wonderful, beautiful, pastoral experience.

Efterklang are astounding on record - a fusion of electronics, sea song, rock and ambience that envelops you slowly and beautifully. Live, they take this core of beauty and project it with such force in to the audience that it takes on a whole new life - every emotion amplified, every note laden with passion. If you caught them last time, you know you can't miss it again. If you didn't... well, you know what you have to do...

Bracken , led by Chris Adams (co-founder of Hood), make simply stunning music - walls of ambient sound, dark dub bass and atmospheres, destroyed and re-claimed found sound, all topped with vocals & lyrics from a man who knows his own heart.

James Yates’s solo show is something to behold - organic electronics, perfect drums, spot on percussion and mad-as-a-hatter inventiveness.

Currently Sweden's hottest export, THOSE DANCING DAYS combine "Sweet as apple-pie pop" with a devilishly sassy Northern Soul and it's this unique combination that has the got the whole of the UK falling over itself and for good reason too!

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The subtle dynamics in their songwriting of JOHN and JEHN and the balance between chaos and beauty and the mastery of heartbreaking melodies Expect beautifully skewed hymns in the key of Serge Gainsbourg.

Wakefield's THE RESEARCH are makers of fun, but also write songs that are like punches in the stomach that knock the wind out of you but afterwards you agree that you feel much better for it.

Koen Holtkamp is no stranger to producing beautiful music. Expect layers of warm organic noise and found sound combine to make pieces that are both gorgeously minimalistic and endlessly deep. He's making the trip over from New York to celebrate the launch of his new album on Type records, and you'd be a fool to miss him!

Gorgeously organic music that washes over you and through you - the best of all ambient music understands the importance of holding back, of understatement, of beauty - Pausal achieve this, and more. Stunning stuff for a night of pure sonic bliss.

Forest of Sound's favourite one man laptop genius, randomNumber, comes back to regale us with his excellent and deeply inventive brand of electronica. There's a reason that he's so energetic in his performance - his music is brilliant. Simple. As.

Forest of Sound

Easily one of the most important bands of our times (and we don't say that lightly), Stars of the Lid are the highpoint of the ambient genre. Their influence on the music that really matters over the last decade has been huge, and we're incredibly honoured to be hosting them again in Leeds. This gig will be very very different, and very very special. Stars of the Lid have excelled at designing subtle, minimalist epics which sound like they're being played on a single multifaceted organic instrument.
A wise man once described SOTL as "divine classical drones without the tedious intrusion of drums, or vocals.
"

The Declining Winter is the musical project of Richard Vincent Adams of Leeds UK, the co-founder of the continuing group Hood and a full time stricken office worker.
What does it sound like? Richard says "cassette tapes spilling out of the glovebox of a 1970's Datsun Sunny somewhere in the north of England, captured on Super 8 film".
He's not far off. Live he is joined by a few more people to bring the beautiful pastoral feel to life. Wonderful stuff.

A Forest of Sound presentation.
Tickets are £10 and are available from We Got Tickets and Jumbo Records.
It’ll be £12 on the doors, and doors are at 8pm.
