Datum Exhibitions and Events 2005
Datum Contemporary Arts and Research is an exciting club which has been set up by QUT visual arts students for the purposes of providing its members with an actual, physical base from which students interested in contemporary arts and research can access the tools and support that young and/or emerging artist need. In particular, Datum aims to act as a social and professional organisation, which allows for emerging artists to access both each other and the local and broader scale arts industry.

Pikadon Nights (Datum)
Perhaps I'm just out of the loop, but I had no idea that there was such quality coming out of the Brisbane electronic underground. Compiled and curated by digital all-sort Sean Taylor (aka Mute-til-late aka Prince Nod) for Datum Contemporary Arts and Research Society, the Pikadon Nights compilation was released as part of this year's Straight Out Of Brisbane festival, and represents something of a coup for the Brisbane's small but diverse IDM, electronic and experimental hip hop community.
A fascinating showcase of our northern neighbour's underground, Pikadon Nights taps into a wealth of raw and rugged instrumental hip hop, abrasive electro and razor-sharp IDM. Taylor kicks off proceedings himself – in the guise of alter ego Prince Nod – with the eerie, hard-hitting hip hop of A Fair Appraisal; blending Eastern-influenced inflections with rock-hard beats and film-noir dynamics. The heavily textured beats and rhythms of sQwurm's aL.teR.nate-oR make it an early highlight, while the crunching beats and almost playful, Plaid-esque melody of Xanpha's Peru are another strong point. The record winds down with quieter, more organic efforts from Dempefka, Sweet Sweet Lo-Fi and Aubyn, which are brilliant, contemplative points of conclusion.
This is surprisingly solid and aesthetically cohesive collection, which works flawlessly as a record. While it's a credit to Sean Taylor's curatorial work, it also says a lot about the quality of the artists. At only eight tracks and 39 minutes, Pikadon Nights is compact and succinct, and no track is wasted. I may be out of it, but I'll tell you what, the Brisbane electronic underground is one loop I want to be part of.

the pikadon nights compilation…
Heralds a growing interactive web of artists and styles – pioneers both in Brisbane and beyond. Curated by Sean Taylor (aka Mute-til-late / Prince Nod) for Datum, the album is a time capsule of the artists, captured amongst Brisbane's burgeoning creative industries. The eight track album courses through 40 minutes of matured and diverse IDM, electronica, ambient, and illbient hip-hop – showcasing Brisbane's core electronic alternative.
These artists are at the edge of Hip-hop and electronic music experimentation in Australia, and represent a local new media industry that is satisfying increasing demand for immersive AV and original, alternative electronic media.
The Pikadon Nights compilation CD was launched on 17th August 2006, as part of the Straight Out OF Brisbane Festival in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley, and the record is now available through Rockinghorse Records, Butter Beats and Skinny's Music.
All proceeds from the album will go back to Datum Contemporary Arts and Research, so that it can continue its work supporting emerging artists.
