Created in 1993 by Foy and Clamp following the demise of Foy's King-Kill/33. Chee was shortly recruited, along with Doug Herring. This short lived line-up (two guitars, no bass) played it's first gig in a house in Home Park (Georgia Tech neighborhood) opening for Atlanta's Bob. Herring departed, replaced by Kotler. The increased confidence culminated in the first high-profile gig - with Crash Worship at the Sombre Reptile, 11/11/93. Band was approached by Cook, who added bass to the fold for the first time. This line-up produced the debut self-released 7" 'Stagnancy Is Revolting' circa '94. The record marked, among other things, the first use of Clamp's drawings which would be featured in much of the band's output. Pringle (ex-Go Devils) joined on sax and the six-piece released the "Philosopher's Stone" 7" (packaging for this included a poster with a photo from the infamous "flour" gig) and their debut CD 'Living Soil' on the local Half Baked label, circa '95. "Indica" and "Mark of Zero" from the disc became live regulars. An appearance at the '96 SXSW highlighted a tour which saw Cook replaced by Ron Bon, then, on returning home, Leigh Jeffries. By the end of '96 Kotler had bowed out, followed closely by Jeffries, replaced by LaFarge (ex-Deity 5000) and (temporarily) Ryan Taylor. This line-up recorded improv sessions - a stretching out ritual the band employed on a regular basis - prior to the next disc. Two pieces from this session were released on Breathe As You Might ("R" & "Slow Shock of Recognition"). A raucous gig opening for Melt Banana's first Atlanta appearance (at Dottie's) was one live highlight of this period. It was also around this time that Foy and Clamp released the 'Our Heat (Your Moisture)' compilation, gathering together songs from their favorite local, national & and international acts. 1997 saw the permanent installment of Whitaker on bass, and the recording and release of the landmark 'Breathe As You Might' CD. A massive jump in quality and complexity of songs, musicianship, and recording quality can be heard on this disc compared to the previous. It is considered by many to be the definitive PV recording, including tracks like "Waterlogged" and "Delamorte". This, the most stable line-up in the band's history embarked on several tours up the coast, playing gigs in NYC, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Ohio (Columbus, Cincinnati, Akron), W.Virginia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and others. Two releases defined 1998 for the band, first the locally-released 'Expel' EP, which saw the band going in several directions from the relatively straight-forward "Walks Alone" to the challenging "New Spirits (For Old Rituals)", and more significantly the 'Malpractice' CD, recorded at the famous BC Studio in NYC (now shared by LaFarge's Seizures Palace studio). This latter disc is considered another high water mark for the group, containing the tremendous "Hooded Mirror" and searing "Taenia Solium". Pringle left the band after Malpractice's release and following the release of '99's 'Axes To Ice' CD ("Control?", "One Held the Key - One Held the Sleep") Whitaker bowed out, followed by Chee, and the band morphed again with the introduction of Brian Ginn and Lindell Todd to the fold. Despite continued vibrant live performances (which saw, among other things, Foy sharing stage front with Clamp on several pieces) and a handful of strong new songs the band folded in 2001, the final gig played over the summer in Lexington, Kentucky. Current musical projects by PV members: Foy's TENTH TO THE MOON, Pringle's TIGER TIGER and TAG TEAM, Chee's AKUYOU, Clamp's LONESOME, and LaFarge's BLUE PROSTITUTES and HALLUX. Clamp, Foy, and Pringle's bands play around Atlanta regularly, while LaFarge's ensembles are based in the NYC-area. LaFarge also hosts invitation-only improvisational recording sessions at his studio in Brooklyn under the moniker GHOSTS OF SEIZURES PALACE in which he regularly participates. The debut Tenth To The Moon CD was released in August 2008 and features, among others, contributions by PV luminaries Clamp, Kotler, and Pringle. Additionally, the drums were recorded at LaFarge's Seizures Palace. (more to come)
Something amazing happened to me yesterday. I was in Exiled Records, in my hometown of Portland, Oregon browsing the 45s when I saw something that I thought I would never see. Much less own today. The Philosopher's Stone 7". Thank you, lord satan. My life is now complete.
I have a good cry everytime I remember that my favorite band doesn't exist anymore. And a knowing laugh when my friends don't understand why PV is my favorite band. Remember when LaFarge mailed me his copy of BAYM because I told him I couldn't find one in Olympia? That was awesome.
