Bio
.. Pink Champagne consists of Steve and Cheryl O'Connor, who first played together in Libya in 1977. They have roots across the globe, but they are currently located in Taranaki, New Zealand. They have just returned from Wellington, having played at wineries and blues clubs there. They have performed at the Mission Bay Streetfest in Auckland, the Bay of Islands and Whangarei Jazz and Blues Festivals, and the New Plymouth Festival of Lights. They play vocal-based jazz, American Songbook, blues and originals. Plus a kick-ass party set! They have released four studio albums: Strike Me Pink!, Stick To Yer Guns!, Cruise Control and Back in Our Own Backyard. The first two have been reviewed favourably in NZ Musician mgazine. They are currently playing gigs in the Taranaki and still return when possible to Wellington to play at the Capital Blues Club. Cheryl is the songwriter and bass player, who's influences range from the classic jazz of Ella to contemporary blues, such as Keb Mo and Maria Muldaur. She also adds percussion and a little harmonica. Steve was trained (forced!) at an early age to play violin and piano, but dumped Handel to follow his Dad into the jazz blues of Eddie Lang and Lonnie Johnson. He writes the music for the originals and his main influences are the two aforementioned, T-Bone Walker, Charlie Christian, BB King, Freddie King, Duke Robillard, Rory Gallagher and Peter Green. He also played bass for bluesman Lightnin' Slim back in the 70's. They both love the music of J. J. Cale and Chris Izaak. Steve wanted "I told you I was ill" on his epitaph, but now wants "I didn't wake up this morning...." . They do not use loops as they prefer a more spontaneous, interactive approach to their music. Too many loops and you may as well put on your CD and go down the bar! Pink Champagne's music has now become predominantly melodic vocal jazz-based although there is always room in their repertoire for a well-crafted cruisey blues. Steve recently played bass for Gerry Joe Weise on his NZ tour. Playing blues at 7 am on the Good Morning Show on TVNZ was a new experience, to say the least. Pink Champagne's albums are available on line, at gigs and in the Rock Shop and Marbecks (New Plymouth), and Slowboat Records in Wellington. Pink Champagne has recently supported UK blues maestro, Lil' Ian Goodsman. CONTACT US: steve@pinkchampagne.co.nz (+64211302373, In NZ 021-130-2373) -

Steve and I would like to thank all those people who have enjoyed our music over the past 13 years. Unfortunately, because of Steve's illness, Pink Champagne will not be performing again for some time. Your thoughts and prayers are much appreciated.

I had the great fortune to meet Steve and Cheryl whilst sound checking before my gig in New Plymouth last year.
They invited me to stay with them and we had a fantastic time.
Steve and I let the blues do the talking.
Another example of the quality of NZ hospitality and friendship extended at a moments notice.
GOD ! I love this country and all the wonderful lovers of music that are essential to every Troubedor's journey.
Thanks, Steve and Cheryl.
Look forward to picking up my hat and sinking a few more cold ones with guitars in hand.
All the best,
