Pink Hawks don't want you to just watch them perform, they want you to join them. Though supported by more than ample musicianship garnering comparison to sonic innovators such as Fela Kuti's Afro-beat inventions, Mulatu Astatke’s Ethiopiques Jazz, or "Sun Ra's melodically off-the-rails piano playing, and the languid, sonically adventurous atmospheres of Yo La Tengo's And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out" (Tom Murphy, Westword), Pink Hawks have evolved from an entirely free-form performance art group, to the more focused psychedelic Nigerian Funk band of today.

Currently led by the experienced improvisationalist Yuzo Nieto, Pink Hawks is not a group to be confined by expectations--no show is ever the same. Formally trained in operatic singing and jazz saxophone, Nieto's musical inclinations led him beyond the roots of his youth to explore other forms of artistic expression both traditional and visceral. As Jon Solomon of the Westword writes, "Nieto not only likes to fill your ears with some intriguing ear candy, he’ll give you something to watch." In addition, Pink Hawks have incorporated the African drum stylings of Cleo Parker Robinson’s African dance rhythm section, as well as a solid cast of horn players, bassists, and guitarists.
