PIPPO MATINO was born in PORTICI (NAPLES). He’s considered to be virtuous and among the major experts of electric bass by the national and European critics. He’s a versatile musician, whose music ranges from jazz to funky, blues, rock and Italian light music. After working up the ladder and having had a lot of experience with the most important musicians of the Neapolitan area of the time (Ernesto Vitolo, James Senese e Napoli Centrale,Larry Nocella,Daniele Sepe,Franco Giacoia)etc., he moves to Rome. He begins to cooperating with various artists and, at the same time, he starts his solo career as a band leader making his first recording: “BASSA TENSIONE” in 1993. It includes pieces like DOCTOR MIKE and BASS SONG FOR NAPOLI. It has become an icon for a lot of young bass players and practically the first of its kind for this well known Roman label VIA VENETO JAZZ, which was founded thanks to the will of the unforgettable Biagio Pagano. He has participated in every edition of EUROBASSDAY in Verona, GUITAR SHOW in London, MUSIKMESSE in Frankfurt, DISMA in Rimini, BASS PLAYER LIVE in New York and Los Angeles, NAMM SHOW in LA and Master Class at the BERKLEE School of Boston. He has always been the protagonist, as the testimonial of MARKBASS Amp and R.Cocco strings, both with his band and in duets with other big international artists of the instrument playing world: Jeff BERLIN, Dominique Di PIAZZA, Dario DEIDDA, Darryl JONES, Stu HAMM, Jonas HELBORG, Linley MARTHE, Matt GARRISON, Hadrien FERAUD, etc.. He was co-leader with the guitarist Rocco ZIFARELLI and the Cuban drummer Horacio “EL NEGRO” HERNANDEZ of a Ital-Cuban trio. At the same time, leader of the “ESSENTIAL TEAM”, a band composed alternately, depending on the periods, by the drummers Pietro IODICE, Sergio DI NATALE, Claudio ROMANO and by the saxophonists Rosario GIULIANI, Javier GIROTTO or Giulio MARTINO+Roberto SCHIANO at the trombone. In both the groups, we find music influenced by jazz-rock-funk that doesn’t forget the melodic lesson of the Mediterranean music. Present formations: “PIPPO MATINO TRIO” PIPPO MATINO Bass, Claudio Romano Drums, Giulio Martino (Paolo Recchia) sax. Sometimes this group of musicians is joined by the young Roman vocalist Silvia BARBA and the keyboard player Peter DE GIROLAMO to give rise to the “BASSVOICEPROJECT”; “TRIO OSTIKO” with Rosario GIULIANI sax and Benjamin HENOCQ drums; “BASS PROJECT” with Dario Deidda bass and Claudio Romano drums; “PIPPO MATINO JOE ZAWINUL TRIBUTE” with special guest AMIT CHATTERJEE guitar and voice. In his second record of 2005 “ESSENTIAL TEAM” ( rai trade, Alfa Music) the guest star STEFANO DI BATTISTA to the sax was presented. He has also collaborated with world-famous musicians: Billy Cobham, Mike Stern, Stefano di Battista, Rocco Zifarelli, Flavio Boltro, Horacio“El Negro”Hernandez, Agostino Marangolo, Javier Girotto, Giovanni Imparato, Derek Wilson, Paco Sery, Rosario Giuliani, Lele Melotti, Giorgio Cocilovo, Luca Trolli, Bireli Lagrene, Roberto Gatto, Walter Calloni, Cristian Meyer, Gigi Cifarelli, Pino Iodice, Tony Scott, Cristiano Micalizzi, Antonio Faraò, Daniele Scannapieco, Eric Legnini, Jean Marie Ecay, Detra Farr, Stephane Huchard, Luis Winsberg, Fabio Zeppetella, Fabrizio Sferra, Solis String Quartet, Andrea Beneventano, Mario Rosini, Lello Panico, Nico Stufano, Enzo Zirilli, Danny Gottlieb, Peter Erskine, Manhattan Transfer, Gloria Gaynor, Andrea Braido, Steve Hunt, Brett Garsed , Famoudou Don Moye, Benjamin Henocq, Gregg Bissonette, Robin Eubanks,Rita Marcotulli,Mike Mondesir,Andy Sheppard,Fausto Mesolella,Michele Rabbia. PIPPO MATINO nasce a PORTICI (NAPOLI) E’ considerato dalla critica nazionale ed europea tra i maggiori specialisti e virtuosi del basso elettrico. Musicista poliedrico che spazia dalla musica jazz e relative contaminazioni funky, blues, rock alla musica leggera italiana.Dopo una lunga gavetta ricca di esperienze con i piu’ importanti musicisti dell’area napoletana dell’epoca (E.VITOLO,J. SENESE e NAPOLI CENTRALE,LARRY NOCELLA,DANIELE SEPE,FRANCO GIACOIA)ecc.si sposta poi a Roma e inizia una nuova serie di collaborazioni e,nel contempo, intraprende la sua carriera solistica da band leader incidendo il suo primo disco nel 1993 prodotto dalla VIA VENETO JAZZ,” BASSA TENSIONE”, praticamente il primo della nota etichetta romana che nacque appunto grazie alla volonta’ dell’indimenticabile BIAGIO PAGANO di produrre questo lavoro che , per la presenza di brani come DOCTOR MIKE e BASS SONG FOR NAPOLI, e’ diventato una icona per molti giovani bassisti. Ha partecipato a tutte le edizioni di EUROBASSDAY a Verona, al GUITAR SHOW di Londra,MUSIKMESSE Francoforte, DISMA Rimini, BASS PLAYER LIVE di New York e Los Angeles,NAMM show di LA,Master Class alla Berklee college di Boston sempre come protagonista , come testimonial dei MARK BASS AMP e R.COCCO strings,sia con la sua band e sia in duet con altri grandi virtuosi mondiali dello strumento suonando con Jeff Berlin, Dominique di Piazza, Dario Deidda, Darryl Jones, Stu Hamm, Jonas Helborg, Linley Marthe, Mattew Garrison,Hadrien Feroud ecc.. E’ stato co-leader con il chitarrista ROCCO ZIFARELLI ed il batterista cubano HORACIO”El Negro” HERNANDEZ di un trio ITALO CUBANO e, contemporaneamente, leader dell’”ESSENTIAL TEAM”, band composta alternativamente a seconda dei periodi dai batteristi PIETRO IODICE , SERGIO DI NATALE, CLAUDIO ROMANO ed i sassofonisti ROSARIO GIULIANI, JAVIER GIROTTO o GIULIO MARTINO+ROBERTO SCHIANO al trombone esprimendo, in ambedue i gruppi, una musica ricca di influenze jazz-rock-funk che non dimentica la lezione melodica della musica mediterranea. Nel suo secondo disco del 2005( rai trade,Alfa Music) “ESSENTIAL TEAM” ha ospitato il fuoriclasse STEFANO DI BATTISTA al sax.
