In January 1999 www.piratetv.net was born out of the excitement of early London pirate radio days, frustration with the dumbing down of legal stations and the straightjacket of commercial television. We saw the internet as the medium of true free expression, and made a showcase for the creation and display of quality edutainment, free from the financial and creative restraints of the industry. Thanks to the internet, we can share our planet's culture with a new global medium that has true freedom from censorship and enforced playlists.
This artist/activist run webcasting station was devoted to the dissemination of non-commercialized, free, artistic expression. Original creators were a small diverse group of multimedia pioneers including Coldcut, James Stevens SPC, Phil Mayer, Chilli and Outerbongolia. PirateTV developed into the online equivalent of an independent television/radio station, livestreaming audiovisual work and performances as well as current, politically conscious global news items 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Among the contributing groups were djs, musicians, visual artists , activists, poets, performers and film and documentary makers, all united in their dedication to retaining total artistic freedom.
