Piva is inspired by the civic and court bands of the 16th and 17th centuries and we play music from court and countryside, tavern and theatre, concentrating on the popular dance and ballad repertoire of the period.
We play a wide range of instruments and our programmes mix loud pieces for hurdy gurdies, bagpipes, sackbutt and percussion with quieter ones for recorders, violin, viol and voice. Our music, instruments and costumes are all accurately researched and we take our appearance and presentation as seriously as our music. Formed in 2002, we have played at a variety of events such as specialist early music festivals, arts festivals and music societies as well as heritage events.
