FEATURES

PJ Harvey
In a stone inn in rural Dorset, PJ Harvey and long-time collaborator John Parish talk the rapture, beauty and disgust of new album A Woman A Man Walked By. Plan B peruses a menu, will pass on the chicken livers, if it’s all the same to you.

Somewhere Out There: Judee Sill
In thrall to religious visions, borne up on ambitious, baroque productions, the songs of this Laurel Canyon composer levitate far beyond flower child whimsy, and still resonate today.

In Praxis: Hauschka
For the latest in our ongoing series on the process of music-making, Plan B petitions experimental pianist Volker Bertelmann for a peek under the lid.

Fever Ray:
Cut free from parent band The Knife, Karin Dreijjr Andersson is Fever Ray, a faceless sculptress shaping strange pop geometry from polished surfaces and ghostly matter

Who I'd like to meet:
Americans! limited amounts of Plan B are now available in yr tiny island - ask in local shoppes such as 'FYE' and 'Barnes & Noble' - be prepared to BEG or BRIBE.

UK natives! stop reading about Pete Doherty's every bodily function! reject magazines who prefer to bathe in dull echoes of record collections past rather than what's happening - or should be happening - now! buy Plan B! buy two! WE REALLY NEED THE CASH! (seriously.)

if you can pick it up in a proud and charactersome independent record shop, do - if not, plentiful copies can be found in WH Smiths, Borders, Fopp, HMV and Waterstones.

to interact with other alienated megafreaks like yrself, visit www.planbmag.com (site also contains archived interviews, staff blogs, afore-mentioned forum, comprehensive list of stockists, etc etc...)

New Fifty Foot Hose CD!

http://anthologyrecordings.com/release.asp?album=FOgIMVzZlkK

Recorded: live on March 16, 2003 at the Beta Lounge in San Francisco

In 1967, San Francisco’s Fifty Foot Hose were certainly one of the innovators of a sound that took Psychedelia to new heights and was captured on the band’s one record, Cauldron. They are a totally unique hybrid—on one hand pulsating bay area acid rock, on the other, fractured electronic freakery, becoming one whole cohesive being. The sci-fi-ish video game-like artwork hinted at the sounds within, as did the Limelight label’s pedigree for truly progressive sounds. Band leader, Cork Marcheschi, used homemade electronic devices to create crude and experimental soundscapes and instrumental compositions that were sprinkled throughout the album.

Often starting shows with a swelling rumble that exploded into the first song, they soon developed a rabid following on the SF scene, though there was the occasional totally wrong gig, like when a very-pregnant Nancy had to perform at a Catholic Girls’ school! Still, the group wowed the crowds, performing with greats like Chuck Berry and Fairport Convention.
