Growing up in the Ireland in the seventies, lying in the midddle of a field looking up at the stars at night , learning to play my guitar quietly in the dark after lights out in a boarding school......discovering the music of John Prine, Tom Waits,Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan,Randy Newman, James Taylor, Hank Williams, , JJ Cale,
Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, ...........the falling leaves, snow on a rope, the wind and the rain, the sun through the leaves of the overhanging trees, the sticky sound of my car tyres on a hot tar road..................to be continued!

"Galway-based singer-songwriter, Paul Mulligan, may not be a
name that's familiar to many, but it's pretty certain that many will be
familiar with the name of John Prine who contributes vocals and guitar
to a couple of tracks on Strong Friend -- one of which is Prine's own
song "Aimless Love."
You can possibly imagine what Strong Friend might sound like just from
that opening paragraph. Mulligan brings his easy, story-telling into a
predominately acoustic musical setting that draws subtly on both his
native Irish tradition and the American country influences that one
might associate with Prine. Of his fellow countrymen, Mulligan is
probably closest in style to Christy Hennessy in both the personal,
reflective nature of his lyrics and the delicate, sensitive delivery of
his vocals.
Strong Friend is a beautifully understated collection of dreams gone by
and the usual unrest with everyday life. The songs are both penned and
delivered with poise and sensitivity, asking the right questions and
tugging at the right heartstrings."
Mike Wilson-folking.com
"This, his debut album, reveals a talented and sensitive
songwriter - Mulligan plays excellent acoustic guitar backed up by a
bevy of capable musicians -The music inhabits the territory between
Hank Williams, James Taylor and Christy Moore, painting an aural
picture of personal angst without touching the hell realms of Damien
Rice et al."

Don't be fooled by the sweetness of the music, folks... this guy's lyrics have teeth!

Biography
Paul was born in Dublin and grew up in Kells Co. Meath. He began writing songs at 14 years old on a borrowed guitar, finding it easier to make up his own songs than to learn somebody elses!
His music is influenced by Irish and American traditional music and by the great contemporary folk songwriters like John Prine, Guy Clarke, and Townes Van Zandt
He moved to Kinvara Co. Galway in 1996 where he set up the “Audiomonkey” recording studio, and began developing his songcraft. His songs have received praise from Paul Brady, Maura O Connell, Charlie McGettigan and John Prine, who makes a guest appearance on Pauls recently released album "Strong Friend".

Hello there, Paul. I hope you are keeping warm and well. Stopped in for a listen to "Monsters," just now. It's a lovely song, that is strangely soothing and haunting at the same time. The finger style playing is brilliant.
Sent Cian a happy birthday message, last week, after a reminder appeared on my home page. Was thinking of sending Richard Burton a birthday greeting, as well, then realized he'd probably take it the wrong way. His birthday was on November 10th, according to the reminder.
Off to do a gig at a local brewery tap-room, aptly named Twisted Pine. It beats playing at cafés where half the audience is glued to the screens of laptops. Last time I was stuck in that situation, I started suggesting possible google searches: "This next one comes from Sleepy John Estes, from Ripely, Tennessee. There's a great photo of him using a pencil and a rubber band for a capo. Don't know if it can be found online. Look him up and let me know."
Gradually, I'm finding venues that are more conducive, but it hasn't been easy. Sometimes, I find myself missing the worst nights at Tully's. That said, the world owes me nothing.
All the best and all the rest and thanks for the music.

Hey Paul - Just found an email from Arts Officer Harold in my yahoo account. It's the first time I've receive a message from him that in any way related to me. I am not even sure where he got my address! At any rate, his message says that you, Tony Trundle and John Faulkner are at the Galway Museum, tomorrow. I will hurry to the airport as soon as I sign out, here. If I don't get there in time, I hope it goes well. It's not a bad spot to play. Only don't set up under that boat they got hanging from the ceiling - just in case, like.
