Reggae was all around from an early age because I grew up in the reggae capital of the UK, that’s the big NW10!!
Got into twotone as a youngster and my love for the music grew from there, living a few doors away from Jetstar (big up Mr P, reg and all the old crew) meant I had easy and cheap access to all the latest tunes from yard so spent most of my time and all of my cash there.
Built my 1st sound (Herbsman) in 1984 and played a few parties for friends, using an old double deck!!!!
Around 1985 I was getting a bit of a rep on the mic so moved around a few sound systems with I guess Jah Observer being the most noteworthy (big up Spider,David,Elephant and the rest a dem) which took me up a gear going from performing at parties and blues dances to doing big shows all over the UK with name pon poster etc hehehehe
My favourite sound around this time was Volcano and I would have loved to chat on it even once, but in 1989 I got the call to join Java and my bredrins levi General and Tiggy used to chat on Java and they were in the top 5 London sounds at the time so it was an easy choice.
Didn’t expect the celebrity status that followed (or some of the badmind) but Sweetie Irie and Joe 90 were ripping up the charts with the ‘new talk’ so I kind of got swept along in the frenzy.
Left London in 1990 and headed to the country and started using what I had learnt in the reggae dances at raves and wharehouse parties, got paid more in 6 months than the previous 14 years.
Did a 3 year residency at the legendary Sterns and worked with all the names at the time like Grooverider (free him!), Fabio, jumping j frost etc
Linked up with 3 mates Dj Quantum, Rok One and Cloud 9 and co formed Jungle pressure in around 1994.
About this time a lot of reggae samples were being used in jungle and it got me back into the groove and so I started Platinum which is also my little cousins name, you can check out his myspace on my buddy list under bad habbits.
Started voicing dubs for the sound in 1988 but the clash scene in the UK at the time wasn’t worth the bother, mostly featured on yahoo room2 clashing some big sounds, like Gold Star and Jah Cuban (big up the Haitians dem)
Still cutting dubs but not so regular but the box is deep, spend my time now between London, Sussex and the Netherlands
Life still as hectic as ever and as I get older I’m less inclined to spend my evenings playing in dark clubs, mostly because of the smoking ban, but I still get out now and then, and get the odd call for an old school night, clash or just a juggle
.RIP Tubby T
