PlayhouseSquare, located in the heart of downtown Cleveland's Theater District is the nation's largest performing arts center outside of New York City. PlayhouseSquare is the region's home for the best in Broadway, concert, dance, comedy, theater and family excitement and performing arts education. It is comprised of eight performance spaces (14th Street Theatre, Allen Theatre, Kennedy's, Hanna Theatre, Ohio Theatre, Palace Theatre, State Theatre, Studio One in the Idea Center) that host over 1,000 performances and 1.1 million guests each year.
Dating back to 1920s, PlayhouseSquare's storied history consists of thriving prosperity, a near demise and vibrant rebirth. A partial list of notable figures and shows to perform at the Center includes: Bob Hope, Katherine Hepburn, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, The Three Stooges, Bruce Springsteen, Bill Cosby, KISS, Kirov Ballet, Cleveland Orchestra, Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, David Copperfield, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Sesame Street Live, Wicked, Michael Buble, David Gray, Sigur Ros, R Kelly, Widespread Panic, Kelly Clarkson, Nick Lachey, BB King, Alison Krauss and addresses given by Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
In addition to performances, PlayhouseSquare's arts education initiatives offer opportunities for all ages to connect to the performing arts through classes, workshops, discussions and other offerings.
It is operated by PlayhouseSquare Foundation, a not-for-profit organization. The Foundation's mission is presenting and producing a wide variety of quality performing arts, advancing arts education and creating a theater district that is a superior location for entertainment, business and housing, thereby strengthening the economic vitality of the region.
