The acoustic pop quintet Play Oliver have elements that resemble recording artists like Weezer and Death Cab for Cutie, and yet, Play Oliver sound like something completely new. Where Weezer developed a reputation for playing geek rock, Play Oliver are more like a preppy pop outfit making songs that you would imagine came from a group of guys who got together at prep school and decided to form a band. They have the ideals of Bright Eyes with a tinge of pub punk relatable to The Shins. Play Oliver's latest EP Pacifically has a west coast sunny pop vibe, although the band is part of the Canadian skyline coming from London, Ontario.
The Buddy Holly-like vocal pitch of Mike Riley sits perched on the plateaus formed by three layers of guitars played by Riley, Chris Diestler, and Drew Thomson. Though the band has three guitarists, the music maintains a slim density as bassist Colin Konrad and drummer Matt Bauchard chime in with gently fluxing beats. The lo-fi production of "Curtains" has a soft trundling tempo and tender swinging motions making it feel very lightweight on the senses. The acoustic guitar and vocal melody of "1,000 Curses" have a countrified fare, while the bubbly pub punk tumbles of "Failsafes, Fallbacks, and Fisticuffs" is the type of music that you'll take with you when you go for a ride with the one that your heart strings are attached to.
The band's acoustic pop sculpting takes the shape of a sunrise on "Snowblind" when Riley reflects over troubling thoughts, "I've been dreaming of a world where everyone is gone, so I never have to say I was wrong." The lo-fi rock settings of the title track "Pacifically" provide a soothing shelter for the ruminating lyrics which ring out, "I gave you away and now I miss your arms around me / And I'm always too late when I call to tell you I'm so lonely." While licking wounds that sound fresh, Play Oliver's lyrics utter every single emotion that is felt, many times to the point of being super sensitive.
Play Oliver's songs are all about feelings that arise when you risk your heart strings being pulled and sometimes battered by your significant other. Pacifically has tunes that let you enjoy the sun rising or walking in a field of daffodils surrounded by the sounds of twittering butterflies circling around you and the one that you love. You'll get a good cry with these songs and spurts of feeling joyful dotted here and there. Their acoustic pop fragments tooled with Riley's high pitched vocals are something new to the sunny pop sonic landscape. It will either take you a while to digest it or you will fall in love with it immediately.
