Censorship exists because the people in control of the media etc. believe that it will protect young minds that could be damaged by explicit material. Does censorship protect us? No. It protects us from ideas we might find distrubing to hear. But just because we can't hear or see these thoughts and ideas doesn't mean they don't exist. They do, and perhaps always will unless we can bring them out into the open. Censorship releases parents from obligations to teach right and wrong. Instead of parents doing it, the government will and religion will. Take Dungeons and Dragons. Years ago a kid killed himself and his mother thought that the game had something to do with it. So she started Bothered About Dungeons and Dragons(BADD) to restrict the game. But all the claims of that organization, about higher suicide rates and crime rates for instance, were unsubstatiated, disproven by other groups. Because of scapegoating, new censorship was wanted. Ultimately censorship is restriction of choice. People get offended by things, granted. But some get offended enough that in their arrogance they think that they have to tell other people that "this is bad, because I think it is!" That's just wrong. Ultimately, I see censorship as a meaningless form of protection. What I find more and more as I get older and what just plain disgusts me more and more is that society wants to protect itself, to shelter itself. Let me make two points. 1) EVIL EXISTS 2) IT IS RATHER PREVALENT, BUT SOCIETY WOULDN'T WANT YOU TO KNOW!
