Originally an electro-industrial duo with rock leanings, they have evolved into a trashy electrorock experience, in part due to the efforts of sonic collaborators Rob Solway and drummer Mark Challans (Fraud, ex-Amp). Their latest album is very much inspired by the post-9/11 vibe of NYC, and the songs are a series of thumping, minimalist trance-rock vignettes in the vein of Suicide or the better (and more electronic) work of Throbbing Gristle spinoff Chris and Cosey. The sound is jumpy, unnerving, and often deliberately low-fi. What's nice about this album is how they manage to weld the distinctly European sound and feel of cold trance-rock masters like Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Coil, and Psychic TV with a more uniquely American rock feel. They are helped immensely in this attempt by Solway's sinister, stuttering distorto-guitar blasts and their willingness to dirty up the sound through what sounds like deliberately primitive recording techniques for certain instruments and tones, even as they keep the drums cold and robotic. The twelve songs on here are all relatively short (nothing is over five minutes, and many are just over three) slices of brooding rock angst that manage to effectively straddle the divide between American and European rock. The faster tracks are also quite danceable, and Solway's dirt-guitar keeps even the more techno-heavy tracks from lapsing into sterility. It also doesn't hurt that Catherine regularly calls up visions of Cosey Fanni Tutti, always the most interesting (and frequently unclothed) member of Throbbing Gristle. Swell, sweaty stuff for the electrotrash rock dirtbag in you. ----

It is from the bowels of Hell that the electropunk produced by Plume seems to be rising, Plume the french duet Catherine and Lucas Tizon, exiled in NY to record their album At Last, for a nocturnal rampage in the dark and menacing streets of the big Apple. The guitar of Rob Solway tears the night with saturated and agressive riffs, underlined by the powerful and upbeat rythm of the drummer Mark Challans. Plume creates a music of the apocalypse, where the electronics, gorged with dark vibrations, sweats of all its inhumanity. At last is a record touched by the fever, inducing a deeply arousing state of convulsive catatonia. A powerful and deep-seated uppercut, highly recommended. ----

Plume es un duo formado por un chico y una chica que combina el industrial y el tecno con el rock y el pop más salvaje. Tras 3 eps y un par de colaboraciones en un recopilatorio, han publicado 'At last', su primer larga duración. Nos encontramos ante un disco lleno de guitarras muy distorsionadas que forman auténticos muros de sonido, baterías cabalgantes que no cesan y voces femeninas que pasan de la dulzura a la locura casi sin darnos cuenta. El resultado de esta explosiva combinación es un conjunto de canciones llenas de oscuridad que te enganchan desde la primera escucha. 12 temas de los cuales 6 son nuevos y otros 6 pertenecen al ep homónimo. A diferencia de otros álbumes que contienen temas ya existentes, 'At last' es un disco bastante compacto gracias en parte a la alternancia de canciones llenas de fuerza con canciones más tranquilas colocadas en el momento preciso. Pese a que puedan percibirse influencias de grupos de estilos muy diversos (desde Killing Joke a Suicide pasando por Siouxsie o Sonic Youth), son bastante originales y personales. A ratos son duros, pero pueden serlo sonando a hardpunk, sonando industriales o sonando muy afterpunks, en otros momentos son mucho más suaves y relajados, bien mediante sonidos pop, bien mediante sonidos más ambientales y experimentales.
Se les podría colocar dentro de ese estilo tan de moda denominado electropunk, pero mientras que la gran mayoría de grupos que practican ese genero suenan muy forzados y parece que lo hacen por estar a la última, cuando oimos a Plume da la sensación de que hacen esta música de una forma muy natural y espontánea, y es aquí donde radica uno de sus grandes logros.
Todo ésto hace de 'At last' un álbum totalmente recomendado que sin duda alguna estará entre los mejores trabajos del 2005, y convierte a Plume en una formación muy a tener en cuenta.

Chez Plume, la blessure est moins profonde. Ce duo français mixte joue un mélange supposé explosif d’indus, de techno, de punk et de pop. Il paraît que les Dj’s adorent… Mais son premier fait d’armes n’en est pas moins vainement crasseux et pas sexy pour un sou. Si on perçoit çà et là les traces d’influences acceptables (Psychic TV, Suicide), il y a décidément trop de frime et pas assez de sueur dans la marmite. Kti Naud et Lucas Tizon (des pseudos, suppose-t-on) pensaient sans doute qu’en s’installant à New York, une fièvre urbaine allait électriser leurs perceptions musicales, et changer le vulgaire en glamour. Peine perdue. De l’histoire de la scène new-yorkaise, ils n’ont retenu que les clichés. Comme pour Maxim, le constat est donc sans appel: beaucoup de bruit pour (vraiment) rien.
