Since the unfortunate sickness of Prince B, Doc G has decided to keep the fans happy by touring and singing the PM Dawn hits as well as his solo projects.
P.M. Dawn is an abbreviation of the idea that In The Darkest Hour Comes The Light ,says Prince Be in explanation of their name. Being children of the decade that made big shoulder pads and greed the latest accessories, P.M. Dawn vibed off of hip hop, R&B, pop music and rock while always finding solace and joy in music. Because they loved everything, they combined it all together in a big, alternative cocktail and laid their first demo to tape.
At first everyone turned them down because their sound was too hard to define. They finally found a spark of interest with fledgling label Warlock and released a 12-inch. P.M. Dawn left Warlock for greener pastures at boutique record label Gee Street. Next, they found themselves caught off guard when Set A Drift On Memory Bliss was leaked by a radio jock. Soon the whole country was bumping the song and the video propelled it to the next level. P.M. Dawn created a classic record and the term alternative was used to describe the song because it just didnt fit into any categories.
Comprised of"Bliss Brothers" Prince Be (The Utopian Lord) and Doc.G (The Doc Of the Dawn), the early-'90s group P.M. Dawn straddled the gap between hip-hop and smooth '70s-style soul, creating an innovative urban R&B that owed as much to pop as it did to rhythm and blues. Recording their debut single, "Ode to a Forgetful Mind," in 1988, P.M. Dawn released their first full-length album "Of the Heart, of the Soul, of the Cross: The Utopian Experience" in 1991 to rave reviews. An immediate hit, thanks to the single "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss," which sampled Spandau Ballet's new wave hit "True," the album's success was followed up in 1993 with "The Bliss Album?," which featured the hit singles "I'd Die Without You" (featured in the Eddie Murphy movie "Boomerang") and "Looking Through Patient Eyes."
Subsequent albums -- the 1995 "Jesus Wept," and 1998's "Dearest Christian, I'm So Very Sorry for Bringing You Here. Love, Dad" -- were praised by critics as "something altogether different and wonderful" (Rolling Stone Magazine) and "groundbreaking" (Los Angeles Times). These well-received and highly priased albums were subsequently followed by another acclaimed project -- their greatest-hits compilation, "The Best of P.M. Dawn," in the summer of 2000.
Following an 8 year hiatus, Prince Be suffered a massive stroke in 2005. despite being stricken with paralysis on his entire left side, The group appeared on NBC's short lived series"HIT ME BABY ONE MORE TIME", and defeated 4 other acts from the past to win $20,000 dollars for the juvenile diabetes foundation. One year later ,Be & Doc created "SUMMER OF BLISS 2006" and began touring the country with no assistance from labels or mainstream radio. Doc.G says"I feel doing it the way we did ,only relying on ourselves, made us stronger, strengthened our bond as blood relatives, and increased our respect for one another's talent and value to the group itself."
The group continued to tour through 2008, making stops in Hawaii and Australia and Jamaica along the way. Prince Be continues to successfully battle diabetes , and proudly accepts his role as a hero to millions of people who live with diabetes, and aspire to improve their quality of life. recently P.m.Dawn reunited with Jon Baker(fomer ceo of gee street records, and current ceo of Gee Jam) currently P.M. Dawn is back in the studio recording new material(group & solo) and are getting ready to release a live album under sony/bmg, and a full length LP is forthcoming.
Over the last decade, the group has sold millions of albums worldwide, and has continued to have a strong fan base. Their sophisticated lyrics, diverse sampling, and what critics have refered to as a "fresh, innovative and enduring sound" (All Music Guide) has allowed the group to bring a maturity and grace to a genre rarely known for either quality. Their influence, compared by critics to such music legends as Prince and Brian Wilson, has "provided the link between Johnny Mathis and Jay-Z" with their special brand of "alternative soul...that really is alternative" (Entertainment Weekly).
P.M. Dawn's new realese will likely provide the same fresh insights, ingenius musical sophistry, and further influence the R&B and Hip-Hop genre for decades to come. Welcome Back to the Utopian Experience.
