Eric Martinez is the new Latino “Triple Threat,” some even classify him as being the next “Latino Diddy.” Martinez is no stranger to the entertainment industry. Under his belt, he has modeling, acting, and singing. He’s had roles in several films such as “Loves Lies Bleeding with Christian Slater, and “Locked Down” with Master P. Recently Eric appeared on USA Networks "In Plain Sight" and is gearing up for roles in new movies, working with artists like DMX, and building Powermoves into a brand marketing and consulting company. He has also worked with artists such Ice Cube and the late Tupac Shakur. Eric’s newest role is in a future release titled “Oblivious,” which is being produced by Tyler Perry’s cousin Marlon Campbell. His success has also led him to become CEO of his own company called “PowerMoves Entertainment.” Eric has been seen in magazines like XXL, Latin Star, Billboard Magazine, Urban Network and Lowrider. This past year Eric was a keynote speaker with President Barack Obama and Senator Hilary Clinton. Most recently Eric was asked to be a celebrity guest at Latino Fashion Week in Chicago Nov. 2-8, 2009.
Nikki: How did you get started in the entertainment business?
Eric: Actually, I’ve been doing music for about 15 years. I’ve always been intrigued by the business. It’s a rough world, and at times you kind of wonder what you are doing, but I’ve actually had a great deal of success, and I continue to move forward with all my endeavors. I started out as a model, and then I started doing some extra work in several films. I was also a singer. I was kind of like a jack-of-all-trades. It’s kind of one of those things where I kept plugging away and plugging away, and then I started “PowerMoves Entertainment,” which is my record label I started about 5 years ago with the help of a good friend of mine Monico Candelaria who pretty much gave me the idea. He said “you know so many people in the business why don’t you start a label of your own,” so that’s what I did. On the movie side I continued to audition and push until I was able to get a role. This business is so hard, you hear NO everyday; so you have to be tough in this business.
Nikki: What types of things do you have going on right now? Eric: Well right now I am currently working with my brand manager to close a deal with Voodoo Tiki Tequila a new Tequila that is incredible! We are working on closing that deal to have me become the brand ambassador for them. I have been reading for roles and hoping to land a few major parts! lol! I am working with my boy Sean Amalla on a new line that he created called "Adrian Nairda" it's dope line!, I am working on my new book tentativey titled "The 25 Points of Power" it's kind of an autobiography of my life and how to make it in the business. My friend Vit Dibelles from XXL Magazine is writing it. I have been making personal appearances and guest speaking all over the country. You know just really grindin!
Nikki: Do you have any artists that you are currently working with?
Eric: Currently I am working with DMX as well as handling booking for artists like Busta Rhymes, The Dream, Fabolous, Maxwell and more! We have an R&B artist Jmar, who is currently on tour. We’ve got VVS. We do a lot of work with Ali Vegas who has a single out with Scott Storch right now, the is “That’s Nothing,” and we’re looking at doing some work in the future with Raphael Saddiq. We’re in the process of doing some branding deals and looking to expand Powermoves into a new realm which is managing athletes. It's a work in progress, but I am very confident in that division.
Nikki: Being in the entertainment business, I’ve heard that you’ve worked with artists, such as Ice-Cube and Tupac Shakur. What are some names of other celebrities that you’ve worked with? Oh gosh I’ve worked with Christian Slater who is our generations “Jack Nicholson.” I’ve worked with Jenna Dewan, Brian Geraghty… Jenna Dewan was in the movie “Step Up”; she was also in “Take the Lead” with Antonio Bandaras. Brian Geraghty he was in “Jar head” with Jamie Foxx, and “We are Marshall” with Matthew McConaughey. I’ve worked with John Carpenter who is a famous horror film director/producer. I’ve worked with Jason Statham from “The Italian job”… I’ve worked with quite a few people. On the music side I have been around the best and biggest names in the industry! to many to mention!
Nikki: Being so busy, how do you relax and when do you find the time?
Eric: I love to travel, and even though I travel with my work I really love to explore the places I go. Miami, NY, LA, Chicago, Texas, Denver; there are so many! I pray alot and I pray for my family and friends, I pray for those in need and even those who don't. I love spending time with my family. I work out alot and love spending time meditating, I walk my 200lb South African Boerbel! LOL or rather he walks me!
Nikki: Your from Albuquerque, NM how is the entertainment scene there?
Eric: You know it's getting alot better! on the music side we have so many labels and artists really grinding and doing it hard. Jmar, David Wade, Fat Fish, Nuthin 2 Lose, The Arkiteks, Juan Gambino, Block Boys, Mateo, Kymberlee Ann Lopez, EXC, Royalty Life Records, Desert Heat, Profit, D-Lyte, and so many more! You know the problem with Albuquerque when it comes to hiphop is that there are so many artists trying to make it. Some are doing it the right way and some are not. There are some who get caught up with wanting to just be in it for the fame and not realizing that it's so much bigger than just Albuquerque. Raw Muzik out of Albuquerque has really supported the local scene; but its a tough tough business. I am really proud of the music scene here though, I am constantly telling my friends and associates from the major labels to watch out for these groups from here! We have been passed over so much, but there is a booming music scene here! I wish local stations were able to support our artists more, but you know there is politics with everything. KISS 97.3 and the new Power 106 do the best they can.
Nikki: Do you feel any pressure behind the title that you are the next Latino Diddy?
Eric: Its funny that you ask that, and you know it’s a tremendous honor. Diddy is someone that I look up to as a mentor, and he’s someone that I inspire to be. I’ve had a lot of people tell me that. They were like wow the next Latino Diddy. You know for me I’m just going to keep grinding, and keep praying to the lord that I’m able to use the opportunities that he’s given me and use it in a positive way, to build my business. Whether it be my book, my acting career, or company, I’m going to use my probability in the game to help other people. There are a lot of people out there… I hate to use the title, but it brings a lot of “haters”. There are a lot of people out there who sometimes feel that I don’t deserve that title, but my resume speaks for itself I’ve worked extremely hard. I know Diddy worked extremely hard for his success, and I remember him saying his overnight success took him 12 years. That’s how it is. This is a business where you have to constantly be doing something, whether it be networking, promoting… you know you always have to be doing something.
Nikki: I hear that you are also featured in an upcoming movie titled Oblivious as well as several other roles. How did you manage to get that role?
Eric: The new movie “Oblivious” was produced by Marlon Campbell…who I’m sure if you’ve been watching TMZ lately, or reading the blogs he’s Tyler Perry’s cousin. He cast me as one of the co-stars of the movie. It looks like Warner Brothers is going to get behind the film; it’s going to have a great cast. I cant wait to start shooting. You know its called the hurry up and wait industry, and we’re really trying to make things happen, and try to keep it moving. My former publicist Pam Pinnock is the one responsible for getting me in the movie; she’s the one that kind of stayed in Marlon’s ear about me. I had just done “Love Lies bleeding” with Christian Slater, and it did very well worldwide and DVD. After that I’ve done a couple of episodes of “In Plain Sight” which is on USA Network right now, and started reading for some other roles. Oblivious came to be and everybody was like “Eric you would be perfect for this role.” Like I said with Marlon and my publicist Pam behind me, It’s really going to put me on a whole new platform, so I can’t wait to get started.
Nikki: Tell me a little about the character that you play in Oblivious.
Eric: The funny thing is that I play myself. I basically play a music manager named Brian who is the manager of a big pop star. It’s an action drama thriller, and it’s going to have a lot of twists and turns in it. I’m the guy that kind of knows what’s going on behind the scenes, but can’t convince anybody around me to believe what I know. Pretty much everybody out there is oblivious to what’s going on. I know and try to warn everybody. It’s going to be a good movie.
Nikki: How is this role different from your prior roles? Eric: In “Love Lies Bleeding,” I was a real dark character I was the main bad guy of the movie besides Christian Slater. He played a really bad cop, and he was really into destruction, whether it be himself, or anything that was in his way. I was one of the bad guys that kind of got in the way of that destruction as well. Everything that I’ve been cast for, I’m either the bad guy, gang member, or drug dealer. In the movie “Oblivious,” I’m actually a good guy I don’t die throughout the whole movie. I play a pretty decent role, and I’m a pretty decent guy in this movie. This is unlike any other movie that I’ve done, whether it be “Locked Down” with Master P… In that movie I was an inmate, and in “Ghost of Mars” I was an alien. In this movie, it’s really going to give me a chance to stretch my acting talents for the movie, and give me some incredible screen time. Plus the fact that It will be opening up in fifteen hundred to two thousand theaters nationwide, so it’s really going to give me a chance to show people exactly what I can do
Nikki: You are also actively involved in the community. Can you tell me some of the community projects that you are working on?
Eric: We have a non-profit organization called “PowerMoves Empowering The Youth,” and that’s something that we put together as a way to help our inner city youth achieve their goals, whether it be in school or life. Last year was our first big event we got a little over 2000 people out to the event. Even the city got behind us, and everybody was real supportive of what we did. Every year we want to continue to make it grow. What I would eventually like to do with it is create some type of scholarship program within my company “PowerMoves empowering the youth.” You can see it on the web its www.empowerslife,org. You can also view it from a link off our web site, which is www.powermovesmusic.com. I would like to start a foundation or a scholarship fund to help the kids that we know are doing well in school, but just don’t have the money to get to college. We would eventually like to help them realize their dreams, and help them pay for their education. Really my VP John Chavez is the whole brainchild behind the event. He was real instrumental at putting the whole thing together and creating the excitement around it…he’s really the one that organized the event that just goes without saying. Although I’m doing extremely well in my career I couldn’t do it without a great team. I have a great family; I have a lot of support. I just recently spoke at Lulac in Washington DC, where I was a speaker with Senator Hillary Clinton and President Barack Obama. Lulac is one of the largest Hispanic organizations in the country, and they really support the movement, and they support me, Again without people like Lulac and people like Pam, Marlon, and my family a lot of what I do I couldn’t have done without them.
Nikki: Every successful person has a team around them, who do you credit?
Eric: First and Foremost GOD without him there is nothing. After that my family and then my team, Jon Chavez and Hawk my managers, my publicist Dominic Friesen from LA, my brand manager Cesar Rolon from Chicago. These people work hard for me because they believe in me not just as an actor but a businessman and person. I cannot tell you how thankful I am for them. I would also like to credit my friends and mentors who along the way have been there for me and encouraged me to keep it movin! Lenny S from Def Jam and the Def Jam staff! Sha-Money and G-Unit, Interscope, XXL, Jeremy Miller, my friends at Universal, Jive, J Records, Koch, Deep Entertainment, Asylum, SoSoDef, BadBoy, Sony, Geez! there are so many!
Nikki: Who else would you like to thank and give a shout out to? Eric: My boy Joe Lopez at LIV Nightclub in Miami! The Palms for ALWAYS takin care of me! Roberto, JJ The Maloofs!! Ann Lerner, my agent Lynette, my managers Jon and Hawk, and all my friends and associates!!

Eric has been in the entertainment industry over half his life as an actor, model and musician. At this time he is still actively pursuing an acting career as well as running a successful label, with a drive that can only be matched by his tenacity; As a Latino he is certainly on his way to making his mark on the industry. As an actor this upcoming Latino has worked on films with Ice Cube, Master P and featured in a video with the late rap icon Tupac Shakur. Recently he was invited to speak on the Latin Hip-Hop and Reggaeton Panel in Atlanta for the Billboard Music Awards, which was said to be one of the most informative panels of the show. While there he met and became friends with the President of Universal Records Distribution, Jim Urie, as well as networking with some of the most influential people in the music business. He was also invited to New York with Fred Sotelo of Viva Hollywood to be a part of the ground breaking of the Latin hip-hop coalition at P. Diddy's restaurant, Justin’s. While there Fred asked Eric to be on the Board of Directors and help with raising awareness in the Southwest by being an A&R and consultant for new members of the coalition. With recent trips to Miami, Tampa, New Jersey, New York and Atlanta, this young CEO is out to set a standard in networking. As the CEO he constantly seeks ways to team up with brands and create opportunities for his artists to be seen; such as teaming up with Coke to drop a Sprite Remix Sampler that features all of PME's artist! They were distributed throughout the southwest and promoted on radio. Powermoves has also teamed with companies such as Comcast, Pepsi, McDonalds and Dr. Pepper just to name a few, for brand marketing opportunities. As a CEO he and the Powermoves artists have also been featured in several national magazines, Urban Latino, Orlies Lowrider, Urban Network and will be seen in many more in 2006. Powermoves will also be seen in a documentary series about the music business and the struggles to make it coming soon on a major network. He is planning on signing with a new agent in 2006 and resurrecting his acting and modeling career; with the connections this man has in the business, that should be no problem. On top of everything else, this young CEO is also an active speaker at schools and companies. Speaking mostly about drive and the will to succeed as well as having a plan for success. Eric often says "I made an artform out of failing. That’s why I can say now with confidence that I know better what to do and what not to do." Powermoves also has big plans in 2006 for its artists, releasing several singles and booking major shows. You can see more of Powermoves at www.powermovesmusic.com
