Pocahontas County Veterans Honor Corps's Blurbs
About me:
The Pocahontas County Honor Corps was formed on 24 March 1996. The original members were formed from members of the two County VFW's and the two County American Legions. The original members consisted of 10 members pictured to your left. Three months later they adopted their By-laws on 16 June 1996. They Became a Non Profit Incorporation on 26 December 1996. In 1998, M1 Garands were stolen by workers at the Michigan Army Armory. An investigation by Congress lead to an Emporium of all issuance of requested rifles. Up until that time, Barry Sharp VFW Post 4595 Quartermaster, had signed for borrowed rifles from the American legion Post in Elkins. The Honor Guard was issued their own rifles on consignment from the Government in December of 1998. The investigation of the missing rifles by congress lead to a log book being signed every time the rifles were used by each member, to be mailed to Michigan each year for their records as to how and when the rifles are being used, and also to justify their loan to Veterans Organizations. That recored started in December of 1998 reveals that the Pocahontas Honor Corps has performed over 350 Military Funerals from then to date. The first two years funerals were never recorded. Today the Pocahontas County Honor Corps is the second largest in the State. The largest Honor Corp is stationed at the States National Cemetery in Grafton West Virginia. The Pocahontas County's Honor Corps is one of the only Honor Corps in the State of West Virginia that has been Department of Defense trained and qualified. They have received several awards from the State Level from Governor Manchin's office, all the way down to the County Level. They perform Military Funerals for family members and are often called upon at the State Level through various Veterans Organizations to perform Honors throughout the State. They participate in parades by marching honors of our Colors and their Deuce-1/2 for their older members. They participate in educating our youth of tomorrow and Donate to Veterans in Nursing Homes. They also put on a free dinner for our County Veterans on Veterans day and perform throughout the County on Memorial Day. They are a non-profit organization That provides flags for all the County's Cemetery's on memorial Day from donations and fund raisers. They are always looking for new members that have been Honorably Discharged from the Military Service.

"...any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can
respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction: I served in the United States Navy."
