Biography
Mi Barrio Querido is the product of great musicians getting together to play exactly the kind of music they love.
An album like this would have been tough to make 10 years ago, when recording sessions were costly and rushed, promotion costs were higher and risk-averse marketing types wielded veto power over what made it onto the album.
Now, a deeply and broadly talented group like POCHIMEX can take its time, compose and select its songs to taste, and produce itself. The record company – Jorge Flores’ GSM Discos – is like family…a team member rather than a micromanager.
So POCHIMEX doesn’t rely on a trademark beat or catchphrase. These are 15 songs that are very individual – none sounds like any of the others – but all of them have a link to the barrio querido (cherished barrio) of the title.
The admiration POCHIMEX receives from others in the tightly knit community of Tejano and norteño musicians is impressive. And one of those relationships resulted in Mi Barrio Querido’s first single – “El Pichicuá” – written especially for the group by Juan “Kilo” Robles, of the prominent Robles norteño family.
A gentle cumbia, “El Pichicuá” is about childhood barrio memories of growing up poor and enduring taunts from the neighborhood kids. It’s a vignette that many of us can identify with.
San Antonio songwriter Arturo Hernández, who wrote all the material for the group’s socially conscious debut Somos Iguales (2006), is back with four sterling new songs.
Over a norteño-cumbia beat, “Viva la Paz” brims with positive energy. It’s the kind of “universal” song that any superstar group would love to get its hands on, but POCHIMEX delivers the lyrics with a sincerity and a personal touch that few others could match.
Serving as something of a sequel to his Somos Iguales cut “Qué Bonito Sueño,” Hernández’s new huapango “Como Su Gente” takes Mexico’s politicians to task. If they were as honest and community-minded as Mexico’s people, the song observes, the nation could finally live up to its vast potential. Musically playful and beguiling (each lyrical phrase is repeated over a different melody), “Como Su Gente” also highlights the group’s instrumental chops with an unusual bajo sexto solo by Pete Bustamante, Jr.
Bustamante himself wrote four cuts, including two songs that pay tribute to his father, who recently passed away. On the corrido “El Señor Pedro Bustamante” and the country-tinged ballad “Mi Padre Sigue Cantando,” Bustamante celebrates his father’s life with vivid storytelling and a little humor.
Roots of family…roots of place…it all starts in “Mi Barrio Querido,” the title track written by Hernández. This song is about San Antonio’s West Side and how it’s worth it to stay in the neighborhood and work hard, in spite of the presence of violent crime.
But the South Side is represented as well with the whimsical norteño-quebradita of “El Club Noche Caliente.” Written by Severo Contreras and Carlos Herrera, it’s a song about the dancehall that with little mainstream fanfare books chart-topping onda grupera stars week after week.
With 15 songs, there’s plenty to discover and savor on Mi Barrio Querido. Cumbias, rancheras, corridos, ballads and even a waltz. Anchored in Tejano-norteño, the arrangements reflect the expertise and confidence of five brilliant musicians.

Mi barrio querido es el segundo disco del grupo POCHIMEX y su propuesta se trata de una reunión de músicos de primera, quienes se juntan para deleitarnos con la música que aman.
Hoy en día, gracias a la tecnología digital, un grupo talentoso puede hacer un disco bien elaborado sin tener que acudir a una disquera que solamente los grabe a cambio de controlar su estilo y su imagen.
Ahora, un grupo como POCHIMEX puede tomar su tiempo, escoger las canciones que mejores le quedan, y hacer buena mancuerna con una compañía sólida e independiente, como la que es GSM Discos del Sr. Jorge Flores.
Cabe decir que POCHIMEX no depende de cierto ritmo ni sonido como carta de presentación. Las 15 canciones de Mi barrio querido son muy individuales, mientras todas tienen lazos con el tema del disco…el barrio querido que vio nacer a estos músicos.
La admiración que recibe POCHIMEX por parte de sus compañeros musicales en la onda grupera es impresionante. Y una de esas amistades – con el mismo Juan Robles “Kilo”, les trajo una muy buena canción inédita. Se trata de “EL PICHICHUÁ” y es el primer sencillo del nuevo disco. Esta cumbia narra la historia de un chico pobre, como muchos otros, que crece en un barrio donde hay pobreza.
También regresa el compositor texano Arturo Hernández, quién fue el autor de todos los temas de Somos iguales (2006), el disco debut de POCHIMEX. En Mi barrio querido encontramos cuatro canciones nuevas de su autoría.
Su cumbia-norteña “Viva la paz” está llena de buenas vibras, tiene un mensaje universal y parece hecha para que la coreen las multitudes. POCHIMEX aporta un toque personal y sincero a este tema muy especial.
Con conciencia social, el huapango “Como su gente” habla sin pelos en la lengua sobre los políticos en México, diciendo que si ellos tuvieran los mismos valores que la gente mexicana, la nación azteca tendría mucho mejor futuro. Con el ritmo tradicional del Bajío, esta cancion juega con los arreglos y las letras de una manera muy interesante, repitiendo cada frase pero con una melodía diferente. Y también se destaca por el desempeño musical de Pete Bustamente, Jr., quién nos sorprende con un excelente solo de bajo sexto.
El mismo Bustamante compuso cuatro canciones, entre ellos dos que rinden homenaje a su padre (q.e.p.d.). En el corrido “El Señor Pedro Bustamante” y la balada country “Mi padre sigue cantando,” Bustamante relata historias de la vida de su padre.
Raices familiares, raices de tierra, todo comienza en “Mi barrio querido,” la canción que le da nombre al disco. Escrito por Hernández, esta canción nos lleva al West Side de San Antonio, y nos recuerda que vale la pena luchar para seguir adelante en tu colonia a pesar de los problemas y la inseguridad.
Y por supuesto POCHIMEX no puede dejar de saludar a la gente del South Side, a través de “El club Noche Caliente”, una canción muy bailable escrita por Severo Contreras y Carlos Herrera. Como lo saben todos los amantes de la música mexicana en San Antonio, este salón de baile presenta los mejores grupos semana tras semana.
Con 15 temas, hay mucho que descubrir y disfrutar en Mi barrio querido. Cumbias, rancheras, corridos, baladas y un vals. Fusionando el texano con el norteño, los arreglos brillan con la inspiración y la creatividad de cinco músicos geniales.
