We present informative and engaging poetry shows about important issues that affect our everyday lives. Each year our annual show explores a new political or social topic. We also bring our work to schools and perform at non-profit fundraisers.
Our last show was held on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the Bowery Poetry Club in New York City. This show, titled Tapped Out: Words About The Water Crisis, premiered new works about the privatization of water, the dangers facing freshwater, and the growing scarcity of this precious resource. The show featured poets Tara Bracco, Erica R. DeLaRosa, Andy Emeritz, Frantz Jerome, Angela Kariotis, Dot Portella, and Jonathan Walton. Photos by Marc Weisman.
Poetic People Power was founded by writer/performance poet Tara Bracco in 2003 to create an ongoing project that combines poetry and activism. Each year, a diverse group of poets are commissioned to write new works on a political or social issue. The new poems are then brought to a public audience in April to celebrate National Poetry Month. Poetic People Power entertains and informs; it raises awareness on specific topics and engages audiences through the expressive art of poetry. To date, this project has produced 7 shows, worked with over 20 poets, and commissioned 47 new poems on political and social issues.
Previous shows include Women’s Words About War (Bluestockings Bookstore, 2003); Voices on Voting and Democracy (Ars Nova Theater, 2004); Coming Clean: Poems for the Earth (Bowery Poetry Club, 2005); Raise the Wage (Nuyorican Poets Cafe, 2006); Sick & Tired: A Call for Universal Care (Bowery Poetry Club, 2007); Activism: The American Way (Bowery Poetry Club, 2008); and Tapped Out: Words About The Water Crisis (Bowery Poetry Club, 2009). Who I'd like to meet: Artists...Writers...Musicians...Activists...Changemakers...Ethical Leaders!
for the record, i think that AMAZING art came out of activism last night. i think that it inspired people to think about a topic that they may have been unaware, or less aware, of in the past. i think the poets did not sacrifice a drop of integrity as artists, but instead that they were moved by the research they did. their passion moved the audience, as did all the reseach you presented in between. there was an audible gasp in the room as you talked about arizona being entirely out of fresh, drinkable water & importing ALL of it from other state. i sincerely hope you continue to produce these events, and that i am always able to attend, because they change me every year. they expose me to an art form i wouldn't otherwise seek out, except in written form, but the level of passion as these are performed... it moved me to tears a few times. thank you, thank you, thank you.
Good to hear from you. Guess that I just got fed up with politics as usual, so I have just launched a political information and discussion forum web site. Comments and suggestions are most welcome. If you like the site, please let your friends know and post or comment on subjects of particular interest to you. HTTP://RECKONTHAT. ORG

Thanks for adding me. ¶ People hear only what they want, so facts alone won't wake them; they need inspiration too. ¶ This world's evils have a common root: Bullies, liars, thieves, & murderers — particularly those in public office — believe we're all separate, motivated only by self-interest, by greed & fear. They want us to share that belief; they use it to justify themselves, to manipulate us, to shape the world's political & economic systems, perpetuating war & poverty. ¶ But you & I have found something better inside ourselves & our friends. It's in everyone, if we can just wake them; we're all one flesh & blood. Let's spread that vision, for until we do our other advances will be minor & temporary. (And Lakoff, Waldman, Hartmann have some new ideas about *how* to spread the word; my web page has a little of that.) ¶ In the ideological struggle, no one can afford to be just a spectator. Join the movement, if you haven't already: get involved in whatever way feels right for you. Question authority. Keep fighting, loving, hoping, singing. Hand in hand, we may still be able to heal this world. ¶ For now, let's see if this meme will spread: "CLOSE GITMO BY BASTILLE DAY. PASS IT ON. " ¶ Love, Eric
Thanks for the add. This looks like something to really get the mind around, and so, a big greetings from Mythville, Colorada. I made you one of my top friends for the week. -- William Blake in Cyberspace

Yay pictures! What a phenomenal group of poets this year. Every year is awesome, but the diversity in styles this year was truly special. It's great to see their photos up so that everyone can associate their images to the names. They deserve that recognition!
