Poet and author Michael J. Burt was born July 1, 1985 in Washington, DC. He was raised in Prince George's County, Maryland, where he currently resides. Burt studies psychology at Frostburg State University in Western Maryland.
In 2005, Burt's first volume of poetry entitled Experience Is Impossible Without a Chance: A Collection of Poems which was inspired by the legendary poet and professor Nikki Giovanni, was published. Lovers of the written word have seen Burt perform at DCs popular poetry spot Busboys and Poets where he served as the featured poet, Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA, Frostburg State University in Frostburg, MD, Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, and heard his poetry on Howard Universitys historic WHUR-FM 96.3 radio station. Burt fulfilled a dream by opening for poet Nikki Giovanni and also had the privilege of being booked to open for Def Poet J. Ivy.
In December of 2006, Michael's poem "Deep From Within" was featured in Gil Robertson IV's book "Not In My Family: AIDS in the African American Community." This book featured essays from Patti LaBelle, MoNique, Hill Harper, Jasmine Guy, Rev. Al Sharpton, and many more.
Upon the completion of college, Michael J. Burt plans to attend graduate school. Along with continuing to express himself through poetry, Burt wants to eventually become a family therapist, with the goal of decreasing the rising number of dysfunctional families in the DC area.
