   Hakkımızda Poetry Idol

Based in London SHORTFUSE is a spokenword night that has been presenting a weekly fusion of stand-up poetry, performance comedy and music since April 2000, co-organised by resident host Nathan Penlington. We actively promote up and coming writers and performers alongside established acts such as John Hegley, Rob Newman, Stewart Lee, and Simon Munnery to only name a few, and we have gained a reputation for giving space to performers to stretch the boundaries of what they do. We have also been giving the opportunity for new poets and spokenword performers to present their work to an audience, and to help make the transition from open mic nights to wider exposure and paid performances, with a night we have named POETRY IDOL.

So what is POETRY IDOL?

The Poetry Idol contests are open to all poets and performers new to SHORTFUSE. We make the initial selection of six performers from all submissions received before the closing date for each of the contests.

The six performers are then invited to perform for 10 minutes and then YOU the audience vote for your favourite acts. The winning two acts receive a full length set at SHORTFUSE.

'I went to a poetry reading where over a hundred people were cheering and booing and seemingly enjoying themselves, which is not the norm for poetry readings. The enthusiasm was unnerving...' - Hugo Williams, Times Literary Supplement

The next two Salt Margins at The Whitechapel Gallery are unmissable. Hope to see you there!

Thursday 2 August

Luke Kennard
Laura Forman
Adam Green
The Ex-Men

At 26 Luke Kennard is the youngest ever nominee for the Forward Prize for Best Poetry Collection. He reads from The Harbour Beyond The Movie, his outstanding

second book. Lazy Gramophonite Adam Green reads from Satsuma Sun Mover, a surreal coming-of-age tale. Generation Txter Laura Forman performs poems about Bon

Jovi (yes!) and Battersea Power Station. Plus music and spoken word from Glasgow-based duo The Ex-Men. Doors 7pm, free entry. Produced in association with

Salt Publishing.

Thursday 20 September

Melanie Challenger
Eleanor Rees
Chris McCabe
Songdog

Salt poets Eleanor Rees (Andraste's Hair) and Melanie Challenger (Galatea) have both been nominated for this year's Forward Prize for Best First Collection.

Which is reason enough to come and hear them read. Like Eleanor, Chris McCabe is a Salt poet and a Liverpudlian. His collection The Hutton Inquiry is a

powerful examination of language under pressure. Musical refreshment is provided by the excellent Songdog, led by playwright Lyndon Morgan.

Who Is The Man?

Join society - don't be left out!
But wait! Don't be a sheep!
Rest your body if you are weary,
But keep one eye open as you sleep.
Join the left wing - Join the right wing,
But don't grow wings of your own,
Lest you decide to fly away,
From this place we call your home.
You are not an individual,
YOU belongs to ME as well.
Yet how easily I blurs this distinction,
So even poets can never tell.
I am the man as you call me,
My reason changes with time.
I am never guilty, never innocent,
Society has become my crime.
I set the trend of factions,
I am their reason, their source.
Destroying you and building them,
I move onward without remorse.
Coward! Turn and face me like a man!
There is nothing else you can do,
But stare deep into the mirror,
And see the man, for he is you.

For everyone that has had something to say about London's biggest weekly open mike event, but never got the chance during the 5 minute limit, the Poetry Unplugged forum is now running! It's very bare bones at the moment, but all people interested in poetry should register and start a topic. It can be found at unplugged.999.org. Be the first to get stuck in!
