My name is pj buchanan - and I'm poetry jack

Performance poetry is what I do.  I tinker with words and rhymes - I shatter the illusion that poetry is something lyrical.  My poetry is satirical, ironic, rhythmically sonic.  And sometimes sweet, laced with sexual heat.  I'm introvert and extrovert, an oxymoronic dyke-otomy.  I've travelled and explored, been bored and ignored.  I've soared heights, been involved in fights, taken flight when the corner gets too tight.  I'm a dyke in shining armour, been there when it mattered, with my banner high, intact, untattered.

I bring my own brand of dyke poetry to anyone who cares to listen or read.  I've performed at festivals (including Glastonbury), bars, cafés, libraries, schools, and even a ferry boat.  I've performed at gay events and straight ones too - I had great fun being part of the first ever Bristol Mardi Gras Fringe in August 2006

I have a Master's degree in Creative Writing from Bath Spa Uni.  I'm working on a new novel, which is about dyke life in South London.  There are no detectives in the story, and it's not set in Victorian times.  Despite this I hope that the book will be a cracking good read and will enable me to retire, way hay!  I am also taking a Certificate in Counselling Skills at Bristol University.  I want to enable people to use writing in a therapeutic way - this is planned to start in 2007.  I am also a member of Lapidus.

Coming out as a poet was difficult...  coming out as was easier!  To a lot of people poetry means the sort of stuff they learnt at school - you know the kind of stuff 'I wandered lonely as a cloud' etc etc.

My poetry is different.

WalkaboutsVerse

Feb 5 2008 10:12 AM

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace -

2 of 230, walkaboutsverse.741.com: WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN

Once drove an old sedan, up north,
From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.

I browsed through the trendy market,
With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.

I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.”

Request or question, I don’t know -
Assured voices, elderly men.
That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

Loved your gig last week at the Bridge Hotel. You made the show - especially as the night was *supposed* to be for Amnesty International. Your 'fashion victim' poem sent chills down my spine.

Hi Poetry Jack

A pleasure to have read with you at Glastonbury. So many different kinds of poetry, but the common denominators were commitment and quality. Even as a straight male, your poem about emerging teenage sexuality struck a resounding chord. Which is, perhaps, what art's all about - to find the broader resonances in the specific.

All the best,
Oz.
