NOW IS THE WINTER OF MY DISCONTENT PTERODACTYL
by Mark McLaughlin

He absolutely hates the snow, so
he huddles in the attic, giving me
static, squawking, clawing madly
at that paisley couch up there,
keeping me awake. Stupid bird.
I raised him from an egg I found
down by the lake, buried in ooze
that crawled with yellow grubs.
I plucked that egg from the slime,
rubbed it down with paper towels,
kept it safe and warm.
Pretty soon: a crack, a scaly toe,
a toothy beak, pale blue eyes
and a whole lot of attitude.
Listen to that stupid bird up there,
making all that racket. He's cold
and crabby, but what can I do?
I turned the heat up, wrapped him
in some scarves. He does this
every year. He's nicer in summer,
when I let him out to fly and hunt.
He's kind of like a crazy cat,
who'll purr and lick your chin,
then scratch your hand. That's why
I only have one eye. He lashed out
but I know he didn't mean it.
He didn't realize how soft,
how dainty humans are. Stupid bird.
I love him, though. I'll take him up
some burgers soon, and oil his wings.
His icy eyes warm up when I do that.
I wonder if he knows he has a friend?
Probably not. He's just
my stupid bird.

SOMEBODY’S KNOCKING

by Michael McCarty

Somebody’s knocking,
don’t answer the door.
It might just be a looter, looking for more.
Whatever you do,
Don’t let him in.
It's a big-city riot
and your life's gonna end.

Somebody’s knocking,
don’t answer the door.
It might just be Jesus, Son of the Lord.
Whatever you do,
don’t let Him in.
It's the Second Coming
and mankind's gonna end.

Somebody’s knocking,
don’t answer the door.
It might just be Satan, foul to the core.
Whatever you do,
don’t let Him in.
It's the Apocalypse
and the world's gonna end.

OF THEE I SING
by Michael McCarty

Who'd have believed
the greatest nation in the world,
America, would fall to dust?
Once so alive, it is now extinct.
The survivors wander this sprawling graveyard,
wishing they were dead --
seeking food, shelter, salvation,
finding nothing.
The lucky ones lie dead on windswept streets.
Their dull, staring eyes have turned
away from their own country,
toward the nation of God.

WICKED QUEEN

by Mark McLaughlin

She was born
with a black umbilical cord.
She has blood-red lips, purple eyelids
and lustrously long, thick black lashes --
and that’s without her make-up.
Her scarlet nails naturally grow into
needle-thin points. Her insidious gaze
makes any mirror magical.
Glass paperweights become mystic
crystal balls when stroked gently,
lovingly by her claws. She is a creature
of beautiful horror and horrible beauty,
as cold and delicate as ice crystals
in a winter spiderweb. She is exquisite,
unique -- and without companion.
Nature does not dare to create
her mate, and no lesser creature
has the courage to woo her.

Shadows long and monsters tall,
who is the saddest one of all?
The answer can be found
in her mirror.

IT CAME FROM URANUS
by Michael McCarty

Uranians,
the sludgy brown creatures
from Uranus,
stink to high heaven
and leave skid marks
when they walk.

Only two people
could stand their stench --
an old man who’d lost his
sense of smell
and a street-person who
lived in a sewer.
When they asked the aliens,
"Where did you come from?"
and they replied,
"Uranus!"
even those two ran off.
The Uranians
really don’t mind.
They're used to being alone.
Uranus
is a lonely place.

Thanks for the add, guys. It's great to meet another couple of writers.

I don't spend quite as much time on MySpace these days.
You are more likely to find me on the discussion board on my website. It's a lively place where we talk about books, martial arts, single malts and pretty much everything else. I hope you'll stop by.
