Pogo in Togo is a monthly (or more) night of diverse curation ranging from arcane to accessible. A bit over a year old, Pogo has lived in Cake Shop since last winter, and was recently outed (by none other than R. Stevie Moore) as having drawn its name from an obscure track by now largely unremembered post-punks United Balls. The name originally referenced (beyond the song) the worldwide sourcing of many of the selections, though this has lately become less essential to the evening. More essential, at least to the atmosphere, are founder Your Friend Matthew’s free-association video collages, still new each show and primed as exceedingly strange and entertaining between-set distraction, like a more hypnotic TV Carnage. As far as the actual selections on my sole PiT stop, I suppose they could have been seen as eclectic or erratic depending on the sympathies of the audience, but for my part I can generally get behind anything that’ll hit an unsuspecting crowd with a serious (and accomplished) noise set between two rock bands.

The idea of a real party in New York might be a thing of the past. What's fun about getting all dolled up, going to some bar, and pay a ton of money for drinks only to have a bunch of heathens rub up against you? Your last chance to see an experience a real party in NYC might be Pogo in Togo. The night usually consists of music that chances are you have never heard before, and includes mind bending visuals by event coordinator Your Friend Matthew. Bonus points that it's held on a Tuesday night, the evening to go out with the least chance of douchebag encounters in your future...What else do you need to want to go?

If you're looking for somewhere to go on mushrooms tonight, this is a good monthly party at the Cake Shop named for a song by early-80s German ska band United Balls. Sometimes they screen full Sublime Frequencies movies above the stage, but generally the visuals are weird things like old Cambodian movies and artsy shorts mixed together into acid-test fractals that are super easy to drift into in the middle of a conversation and get completely lost in, even if you're sober (which you shouldn't be). We don't know who any of the bands are this month, but we feel safe in saying they will probably meet someone's definition of "a little out there."

"The Sweet Hollywaiians have probably the best feel for this 20's music of any string band working today. They manage the rare feat of sounding relaxed even when their playing is hot, are top notch musicians with tasteful arrangements and a full, rich, warm sound.Plus, they have a nice gamut of tunes, from King Nawahi to Giovanni Vicari to Bobby Leecan. See them live, if you can, for an unforgettable experience. If you can't, buy their Cds!" ~ Terry Zwigoff
