Police were called about 2 a.m. Wednesday and arrived to find the baby's mother screaming with the baby in her arms as she ran down the street. The family lived in the 700 block of Post Place in East St. Louis.
A gunman sprayed the rear of the house with at least 15 shots, Ward said. The baby was asleep in a room with his mother and father, who were not hurt.
Two other adults, two teens and another baby also lived in the house. They were not hurt.
Ward said a motive had not been established, nor were there any suspects or weapons recovered. He said there had been numerous shootings in the area.
In the case Tuesday, the family was sleeping about 1:40 a.m. in their home in the 2100 block of Cleveland Avenue when someone knocked on the door. The man, 39, asked who was there, and no one answered.
In the next few minutes, someone began firing shots into the house at the bedroom area, which is near the front door, police said.
The bullets struck the man, his girlfriend, 40, and the girl.
Police found 15 rounds of bullet fragments at the scene.
The girl is expected to recover. The man and woman also were hospitalized, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening, police said.
