Howdy from Times Sq. Cathy, great to see you on the Space, many thanks for the Add-On! I met your Dad in 1975 in Boston, he was doing a trio gig in Park Sq. with Jimmy McGriff and Jack Wilkins. I was playing down the street at the Caribbe Lounge so I got a sub and bought 2 tix and brought my date for the late show...got there a little bit early and heard the last half of a nice Blues and then he started breaking down his drums. I told the bartender I had tickets for the second show and I got a sub and everything..what happened? He said that Buddy had to drive back to the City for something so if I wanted my money back I would have to ask Buddy. I said, yeah sure! I was thinking he might kick my ass or something but then I was sitting there at the bar and so I thought well what the hell it wouldn't hurt to ask him, so I came over and said, "Excuse me Mr. Rich, my name's Jon Hammond..I'm an organ player over at the Caribbe down the street. I got a sub and had tickets for your second show, I was really looking forward to it but I only heard the last part of the Blues and I see you're breaking it down so is there any chance of getting a refund? He told the bartender "Give this man his dough back and I'm buying him a drink for him and his date"...what a cat! He was really nice, I was scared shitless. I got to hang out and talk with Jimmy McGriff, also now R.I.P. and Jack Wilkins. Years later I ended up playing some with Jack here in NYC. He sure was the greatest Cathy! Thanks a mill' for the Add-On! I'm doing a radio show every morning on KYOURADIO 1550 AM HammondCast Show, give me a holler some time, I'm in the 802 book.
