  • Sweet Hollywaiians

"Ticklin' The Strings" by Sweet Hollywaiians
Amazing Japanese hot string band playing 1920's, 30's, 40's style hawaiian, swing, calypso, blues, italian music and originals, featuring vintage instruments.3 songs with Robert Armstrong and Tony Marcus(from Robert Crumb and His Cheap Suit Serenaders)

"The Sweet Hollywaiians have probably the best feel for this 20's music of any string band working today. They manage the rare feat of sounding relaxed even when their playing is hot, are top notch musicians with tasteful arrangements and a full, rich, warm sound.Plus, they have a nice gamut of tunes, from King Nawahi to Giovanni Vicari to Bobby Leecan. See them live, if you can, for an unforgettable experience. If you can't, buy their Cds!" ~ Terry Zwigoff

Detroit was a bustling town of business and industry in the earlier part of the twentieth century. Its CBD was centered near the Detroit River across from Windsor, the Canadian counterpart. It boasted a famous shopping district to the near north with stores and entertainment strategically situated in the necklace district, so named for the physical pattern the streets assume in a series of necklaces that lie symmetrically across Woodward Avenue. Near Woodward and State Streets, the famous Hudson, Kern and Crowley blocks catered to a hundred thousand shoppers a day anchored by Joseph Lowthian Hudson’s department store for men and boys. Hudson's circa 1966 B.Siegel near turn of the century Automobiles were not yet prevalent and so people were relying on horse and carriage and streetcars, which ran the lengths of the major arteries throughout the city. A vast array of salt mines ran beneath the city that avoids collapse by their cavernous design. This perhaps was one of the reasons a Subway rail system was deemed hazardous and never implemented. Henry Ford’s five dollar a day promise brought people to Detroit in droves from the south and Eastern Europe. Romas at Erskine & Riopelle is Detroit oldest restaurant dating back to the 1888 when the Marazza family opened a boarding house in an old fire station & fed guests Italian specialty dishes. By the end of the 1910’s, gridlock became inevitable and General Motors, who were in need of a new headquarters, decided that building it downtown would cause too much gridlock especially since by 1919, many people now owned automobiles. The Dodge brothers are buried at Woodlawn cemetery near 8 mile & Woodward. The Wilsons mausoleum is in the background The over congestion of the inner city actually allowed the company and others to pack up and move to a new location three miles north, appropriately titled “New Center”, in the hope of eradicating the congestion in the downtown area.(sjh) Following another playoff upset in 1953 at the hands of the Bruins, the Red Wings won back to back Stanley Cups in 1954; over Montreal, when Habs defenseman Doug Harvey redirected a Tony Leswick shot into his own net; and 1955 (also over Montreal in the full seven games). Also during the 1955 off-season, Margurite Norris lost an intrafamily power struggle and was forced to turn over the Wings to younger brother Bruce, who had inherited his father's grain business. Detroit and Montreal once again met in the 1956 finals, but this time the Canadiens won the Cup, their first of five in a row. In 1957 Ted Lindsay, who scored 30 goals and led the league in assists with 55, teamed up with Harvey to help start the NHL Players Association and, along with outspoken young netminder Glenn Hall, was promptly traded to Chicago (which, ironically, was owned by James D. Norris, Bruce's elder brother) after his most productive year.(Wikipedia)

The photographs & information on this site are a brief summary of nearly 18 years of research from the 80 to 90 thousand miles I have driven through the streets of Detroit, Dearborn, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Southfield, Ypsilanti, the Grosse Pointes, Chicago, & Oak Park, Il. All resources on THIS site are public domain or in someway, cited. My research and efforts have been the result of massive inspiration from, in no particular order, my grandma Borthwick, the entire Rockwood family, Ted Ligibel, David Poremba, Cherie Gay, & Mark Larco just to name a few. I would not have been able to do this without their help & untiring interest. Special thanks to Cheryl Olson & Elizabeth Clemens for imaging support. Special thanks to Melinamade for many years of service for hosting the background....... WE will miss you! Chin Tiki opened in 1967 by restauranteur Marvin Chin. Who I'd like to meet:

Laid back people who know how to have fun and have a great sense of humor. People who love the vibrance of the city, have a thirst for its history & a strong desire to see it reemerge as the Paris of the Midwest. Finally, those who understand that the only way to change the negative image, bureaucracy, & political separation is to change the voting power inside.
