About me:
Grand Poo-bas Record Shoppe was founded in 1994. Located in Lakewood, Ohio – 5 minutes from downtown Cleveland – Poo-bas originally catered to the high energy club dance market of the time. 1998 brought the current management and Poo-bas broadened their selection to included additional underground titles that were previously unavailable to DJs, clubbers, and partiers in Northeast Ohio. Grand Poo-bas is Djs serving Djs and this is the mentality we approach each day of business with.
Currently:
While Grand Poo-bas still carries newly released CDs, our focus is primarily on 12" Vinyl Records. Yes, even in 2007 vinyl is still the primary medium of choice for serious DJs worldwide.
Every week we stock the latest domestic and import releases in House, Drum & Bass, Breakbeat, Trance, Techno, and Electro into Ohio from all over the world. We also seek out and stay educated on the latest trends and newest subgenres to hit the underground dance music scene. By no means do we stay limited. If you are looking for downtempo, classics, mashups, dubstep, fidget, minimal, micro, hardstyle, or whatever - just let us know. As long as it is new, we'll try to track it down for you!
Online Presence:
We do not offer an online store because we prefer direct communication with our customers. Face to face, email, over the phone, or by carrier pigeon - we prefer to develop a personal relationship with you and cater to your specific needs. We will go the extra mile to find tracks for you, whereas many stores only know you as an account number. We post weekly stock, pre-order, and preliminary lists in our blog. We also send those updates via email along with a list of area events. You can find all of this information at
http://www.poo-bas.com and subscribe to our email list.
So how DO you order?
Yes, we can send you records through USPS, UPS, or FEDEX. We prefer that you stop by the store, but you can send an email or make a phone call. See the website for details. We accept cash, major credit cards, even paypal. We can respond to email or phone calls quicker than we can through myspace. doug (AT) poo-bas.com would be the email to use.

Stock:
We have an expansive backstock section and plenty of bin diving at bargain prices. Check out the dollar bin! We publish release lists from many of our distributors. You will see more on our order lists than anywhere else you could possibly look – and our drum & bass preliminary list helps you get your hands on all the promos as soon as they are announced. Some people think that this is giving away trade secrets, but we believe it makes customers educated about the music that gets released and it puts everyone on an even playing field. If anyone really wanted to steal so called trade secrets to open another store - just ask - we'd be happy to help you get started and even sell you fixtures, and records, and record bins, a few computers, a cash register, provide you with employees and people eager to help out, set you up with a storefront - and well you get the point ;)
Food for thought:
"We look at the present through a rear-view mirror. We march backwards into the future." "Invention is the mother of necessities." These are referred to as McLuhanisms - and he has a lot to say ;) In fact he is the one who first wrote about "Global Villages" and how they would be formed when society implodes from too much information. That is how I see things with the file jockey culture of today, and much of the music scene in general. Opinion is in the eye of the beholder, and there are too many beholders out there to have any kind of mass impact which will move our music forward into society. The only visible exposure of dance music comes through over marketed propaganda machines that spit the latest in disposable music so fast that no one pays attention or even cares anymore. It is as if the whole movement gave way to small sects of overblown egomaniacs and self righteous Über-Hip cliques intent on building up themselves and not the music. Those people used to come and go, and now they rise and fall so quickly that everyone else stopped paying attention. Those who craved new music have lost interest or turned to other sources. They no longer need to leave their house. For them, the dj as filter is dead. They are not challenged. They don't learn anything new. The new filters, in the land of digital, are blogs, websites, and small segregated communities that are almost cult-like in their views. They all listen to the same thing, dress the same, stroke each other's egos, and tell tales of how their sound & music will take over the world and how packed their nights are and how successful their scene of 15 people in London, 23 people in Rome, and 4 people in Ohio are. I hear the market for "east Texan fussy trance" is the next big thing - and how sick that scene is ;) Not to mention, we've seen just how well online hype impacts the real world (snakes on a plane and countless other examples of people who thought they were on to the next big thing because they read it on the internets). Re-enter the 12” vinyl record, and the djs who play them. A format that is not lost in the crowd and music that will effect change. A format that loudly sends a message – This music is worth owning. Music that matters.
Finally:
We do this out of love for vinyl, for music, and to spread a world of music to others that has brought joy into our own lives. We appreciate all the local support and regardless where you love - we would love the opportunity to do business with YOU!
