Heroes
If to be one's hero a person must possess these traits: be a humanitarian, persistent, responsible, honest, trustworthy, courageous. brave, selfless, humble, steadfast through trials and tribulations and maintains a sense of humor in times of adversity...............then I would have to say my patients who are facing death through diagnosis of a terminal illness.
About me: I think life is better than a roller coaster ride and I love me some roller coasters!
I am the best and the worst of the human species guilty of expressing these attitudes at one time or another; honest/dishonest, accepts authority/ rebellious, affectionate/cold, motivated/unmotivated, aspiring/self-satisfied, candid/secretive, caring/uncaring, accepts change/rejects change, cheerful/grumpy, considerate/inconsiderate, cooperative/combative, courageous/fearful, courteous/rude, decisive/indecisive, devoted/uncommitted, determined/unsure,
does what is necessary/does what is convenient, perseveres/gives up, enthusiastic/indifferent, faith in life/life can't be trusted, faith in oneself/lack of faith in self, faith in others/others can't be relied on, flexible/inflexible, forgiving/unforgiving, focused/unfocused, freedom given to others/controlling, friendly/unfriendly, frugal/wasteful, generous/stingy, goodwill/ill-will, grateful/ungrateful, hard-working/lazy, humble/arrogant, jealous/not jealous, kind/unkind, mature/immature, modest/vain, open-minded/small-minded, responsibility/blames others, self-confident/insecure and been assigned these attributes at one time or another such as achieves/doesn't achieve, adventurous/conventional, calm/excitable, clear goals/lack of, clear thoughts/muddled thoughts, completes/doesn't complete, conscious of one's weaknesses/unconscious of one's strengths, constructive/destructive, creative/uncreative, delegates/tries to do everything, deliberative/reckless, detail-oriented/scrimps on details, dynamic/passive, efficient/inefficient, effort taking/lack of effort, focused/ scattered, goal-oriented/directionless, good/evil with that being said, I am the sum total of my mistakes and achievements made in the image of God with the freedom to choose.
R.N. -- work in Hospice Nothing deep or poetic just some thoughts about my job.
I've learned as a Hospice Nurse that people do not change because they know they are dying, families do not magically fall in love with each other and start rallying around the terminally ill like in a Lifetime movie, we don't go out with a bang - more like ,become unresponsive or terminally agitated and then slip off.
Most of my pt's say they were just moseying along when WHAM ! - all of a sudden one day something strange shows up in the labs or a new pain, bump or lump shows up "really I've never been sick a day in my life" - off for more testing, testing, testing, probing, poking, cutting .... only to be told after months or years of spending every minute and $$ with the health care system "There's nothing more we can do."
BUT, I've also learned from my patients who are admirable, abnormal, brave, everyday, cool, airy, neat, decent, groovy, nutty, ordinary, interesting ,divine, sound, fabulous, flagrant, marvelous, sensational, splendid, rude, superb, terrific, wonderful, unpleasant, dandy, delightful, swell, tremendous, vintage, naughty, mostly just ...... unfortunate, there is a successful death and unsuccessful death, that time is ever so precious not something to waste, not to sweat the small things or small people for that matter and as one of my pt's said to me " live your life to the FULLEST, do it all, see it all, don't waste a single minute ( I know, sounds very cliche - like I said this isn't anything deep or poetic just some reflections about my job )"
Oh yea, something else that is super important, I have 3 ferrets (my lil angels):
Poohnannie
Abbey
Fatty
Cassie -- a German Shepherd puppy (now 11 months old).
That is true. He wouldn't let us get rid of thoes flying mutated cricket/roach/hopper things in the kitchen. They were scary. I was runnin' and they had little babbies. O no, I said they got to go, they are going to eat the kitties. Dad said "No, don't hurt them. And they still remain in the Yates household today. We need to put them in Kim's Krypt. Thanks, Dad liked you alot. Dad liked the Scarlet Angel new CD too. #9 the end is his saying "Flying cock and ball" I will find that....
