Bio
Howard was born in Kansas City and raised on a farm until he traveled north to Minneapolis to join the folk and blues scene in the sixties. It was there that "Snaker" Dave Ray inspired him to take up the 12-string guitar, a move that seemed proper, since the first song Howard remembered learning as a young boy was "Goodnight, Irene". It was also his performing of 12-string blues that led a fellow musician to tag him with the name, "Poor Howard", from another Leadbelly song. After a stint in the army, Howard traveled from coast to coast, as well as performing in Europe and Japan, before settling in New England. He has entertained audiences in coffeehouses, bars and at folk festivals with his heartfelt vocals, dazzling guitar and endless anecdotes, puns and shaggy-dog stories, and has shared the stage with such blues notables as Archie Edwards, John Jackson, Peg Leg Sam, Mojo Buford and Lazy Bill Lucas. His passion and reverence for the country blues of the 20's and 30's is infectious, and he instills a new interest in this roots music wherever he performs. Scott Alarik, folk music writer for the "Boston Globe" said, "Poor Howard's 12-string guitar has the solid propulsive groove of a stead-moving freight train; and he has an uncanny way of singing classic blues tunes as if their hard luck stories were happening today. In his care, old songs never seem old, but timeless, personal, pulsing with knowable human emotions. His own songs nestle beside them as if they grew up together." Recently, Howard has teamed up with harmonica player Mike "Bullfrog" Rogers to form"The Poor Howard Trio". When it was pointed out that there were only two members, Howard said, "That's because we can't afford a third." Mike has been playing harmonica for over half a century, playing folk and blues, and has appeared on over 30 recordings. He was heavily influenced by the style of Sonny Terry, and his style compliments Howard's 12-string guitar. -
