Bio
Poostosh emerged from interminable improvisations in front of mixing console of the booth of the one respectable Moscow club /theatre, where they all were working. Initally they were called "Dark Brigade", but it was a short moment. The name "Poostosh" appeared in 2002. In Russian it means - uncultivated plot or a heath. They were playing and recording in a lot of different styles without any serious mixing, in one cut, quickly creating the sound of a compositions due to our mood in that moment. Thus the genre has formed - laid-back, evocative, experimental, slightly psychedelic, always attracted by contemporary classic music and shoegaze/post-rock, cinematic dimension. In May of 2005, Mikhail MOX Salnikov decided to establish a new label - Untime Records to issue music of Poostosh first of all. With support of friends, "UNTIME" album revealed itself for listeners. Some words about "Untime": "Poostosh's Untime is one of those albums that appears out of nowhere but quickly ends up lodging itself determinedly into one's daily listening regiment. The album's eleven folk evocations effortlessly transport one to panoramic country fields of times past...." (Textura) "...comforting listen full of pastoral pleasures, mixing folky guitar with a soft bedroom electronica/ambient feel. Synths wash around in the background while subtle melodies float around on the wings of doves...There are a couple of more downbeat tunes that sound like they could easily be soundtracks to some sort of glacially-paced eastern European existential road movie but on the whole I'm thinking more in the region of hazy childhood flashbacks in low-budget 70s films..." (Brett, Norman Records) Physically the splendid digipack of "UNTIME" can be purchased online in respectable CD BABY or Norman Records. 2007 - MONSTAAR RECORDS has released the album QUTH meets Poostosh at the Secret Door. QUTH is a dark ambient project of Mikhail Salnikov. The album is a result of experimentation in an particularly ambient field. It has a nostalgia for times when EG Records existed. The album's mood is thick and trippy and will satisfy every ambient lover. QUTH MEETS POOSTOSH can be purchased at MONSTAAR RECORDS - www.monstaar.com. 2008 Poostosh 2002 can be bought (MP3) on CDBaby from now on. It's actually the first album of Poostosh and it can be considered as proto-Poostosh in present comprehension (there were no Andrey Gavrilov yet and sound was different). Misha Salnikov and Andrey Kovalenko with a support of friends started recording their improvisations in 2002 (guitar, flute, percussion etc) with using mixer, MD and tape players as playing instruments as well. Here you can listen to the album conjuring up associations with such groups as Controlled Bleeding, Rapoon and The Hafler Trio... .. ................................................................................................................................................................................ ..2009.. .. .. ..NEW ALBUM IS OUT NOW!!!.. .. .. Our new album "Herbarium" is out now on CdBaby. .. Diverse palette of styles (post-rock, ambient, electronica, trip-hop, with elements of noise, dub, neoclassic and free improvisation), united by cinematic, slightly pensive mood. .. «Herbarium» is called so because of heterogeneity of «songs», which can be compared to miscellaneous leaves in the album, still being belonged to the family of trees. Trying to avoid non-alive metaphors here, only thought of diversity and warm and innermost feeling that herbarium is capable to conjure up. «... This leaf I picked up in the park where I met her, and this - I sat by the river, contemplating...». So tracks were created – one was captured in some magic jam, another – recorded layer by layer and meticulously mixed then, next – cut from previous sessions and so on. All compositions are united by Poostosh sense of music – mostly pensive, spatial, tender and experimental. There's a lot of soul and charisma in every leaf... So please let your soul look over our HERBARIUM. .. "....also a highly enjoyable beast, chucking ambient bits, neo-classical bits, softly psychedelic bits, gently picked guitars and the odd laid-back beat into a big pot and stamping on them playfully until they form something that's quite akin to one of Air's soundtracks, or occasionally Pink Floyd at their most drifty. I can well imagine people snuggling up to this CD on lonely evenings." (Brett, Norman records) .. "..There's a tension, imagination and evocative nature to their work and with any luck if Herbarium reaches the discerning ear of any Hollywood directors then we could see their music reach the stage it deserves." (Charlie Brown, The Music Critic) .. "Herbarium is a marvellously cinematic album, vast and sprawling yet with a rich dreamlike humanity at its core...the album treads a fine line between the shimmering Bauhaus simplicity of Daniel Lanois and the 'flowers in the hair' pastoral introspection of More era Pink Floyd. The ideal album for just kicking back and watching the grass grow under your feet." (Steve Burnett, The music Fix) .. "This one is definitely a grower...Give it some time and once you get it, it will be hard to not listen to it on a regular basis...This is a band that I would love to see perform live and their album gets a good solid 8/10 from me." (Imogen Davies, Tasty) .. "...Herbarium is an album worthy of any collection. This is music to think to." (Tom Turnbull, You Like We Like) .. "Poostosh's real genius is being able to unearth beauty....for most of the time I was mesmerised by its invention and weirdness." (Jonathan Leonard, Leonard's Lair) .. "A chill out album made by someone with a dark sense of humour and a need to make sure that not one song sounds like another, whilst at the same time making sure they all fit together in majestic ebb and flow... Poostosh evoke sun blasted landscapes and dark forests, vibrant inns spring up along overgrown paths, and mountains form from the crumbling tenements of forgotten cities. ... each track being a whole new landscape to explore...there are many secret corners and hidey holes to explore and find treasures."
