Exeter band, Noise Annoys Simon’s singer, Simon Bish was previously in early 90s John Peel darlings, Thrilled Skinny. There’s an honesty and a purity about Noise Annoys Simon, which is captured across these 12 slices of perfect guitar pop. This is a band that is not concerned with regurgitating the same old indie-shmindie angular boredom, which has been doing the rounds for years. Theirs is a fresh sound, and their art lies in delivering summery melodies, laced with a bright guitar sound and embedded in a warm production. ‘Peardrop Sweetness’ and ‘Haybales & Vapour Trails’ can only be described as total pop genius. Although Pop Noise as a label has a very DIY approach, the quality of its music is far from it. "FEAR AND LOATHING IN TIPTON ST. JOHN"
(Pop Noise Records)
This is the solo project from Devon-based multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer and arranger, Andy Fonda, showing that he’s Jack-of-all-trades and master of all. To sum up ‘Fear & Loathing…’, think Stone Roses, if they’d managed to make an album around their ‘Fool’s Gold’ era. But then again, that’s selling Fonda short, because as a writer, singer and bass-player, he outshines his influences, despite the fact that he’s entirely responsible for every last note on this album. ‘All About You’ should be a summer anthem. ‘No More Wine’ sounds like a classic you’ve loved for years. His string arrangements, use of drum breaks, bass parts and attention to detail are astonishing. Above all, great songs always stand the test of time.

A Fine Day For Sailing ‘Honeylands’ (Pop Noise Records) ****
Bittersweet lyrics and gorgeous melodies care of Exeter band, fronted by the genius songwriter, Matthew Stead. ‘Honeylands’ represents the traditional indie sound, reflecting the likes of Television Personalities, but with its own warmth, going straight for the heart. The beauty of these songs is made more vivid by the imperfect approach with which they are played. There’s more soul here than in any current so-called soul or R&B. There should be more bands like this in our area.

Simon Bish 'Heart Shape Sky'
single review... Simon Bish, the man behind Pop Noise Records from what I understand. This single from what I understand is a taster to an upcoming full length. Track one is a song called 'Heart Shape Sky' is a nice melodic acoustic number, a sort of folk pop sound. Track two is a song called 'Honey Hair' and features an electric guitar this time and as such sounds a little more gritty, once again though remaining quite melodic. So to sum up, these are two really cool melodic pop songs, sure they don't break any new ground, but really who cares. There just really cool songs that will get stuck in your head. Check them out...

Simon Bish - "Heart Shape Sky EP" cd single (Pop Noise Records) Simon is also in Noise Annoys Simon, and is/was involved with most of the other bands on his label, Pop Noise. So, like Simon Goalpost was a scruffy, lo-fi version of the already scruffy Thrilled Skinny, the two songs on this single sound sort of like a lo-fi version of his current band (who are one of my current favorites, by the way). These songs have that same TFC/Monograph style at heart, but sound closer to something like Another Sunny Day (particularly the sweet, but somewhat fey title track). The b-side, "Honey Hair", could've used some extra instrumentation (both songs are essentially just vocals and guitar), but it's not a bad tune on its own.
