| About portobella |
|
From the title of their first single, Covered In Punk to lyrics from Say What You Wanna Say:
I don't want no culture shock/and I don't want your dirty socks/I don't want no traffic jams, no groping hands, no desperate Dans/I don't want no plastic music/West End shows and home improvements/I don't want no Simon Cowell/So Simon Cowell be quiet now!
Portobellas lyrics are always witty and observant. Teamed with the catchy, inyaface melodies, one thing is clear: Portobella make songs with balls.
The band came togetherwith a desire to make a record that sounded British in the traditions of some of the classic post punk acts. They have been influenced by a wide range of music over the years, including Police, Blondie, Transvision Vamp, Sex Pistols, The Jam, N*E*R*D & Roxy Music and Goldfrapp. Tired of formulaic safe pop, the product of endless Pop Idol and Fame Academy type shows, they felt that it was time for something different. They have fused their musical backgrounds and influences and created a sound that incorporates electroclash synths with pop melodies and punk guitars. Inspired by their time spent together at London clubs like NagNagNag and Trash they sought to make music for this scene and take it on a stage further.
The first three limited releases: Freakin In Stereo, Covered In punk and Viva La Difference have seen them continually top the uk buzz charts. featured in the MTV series Breaking Point, it is the beginning of exciting times for the band.
