What is Portus 2008?

In a word: Mystery! This Harry Potter symposium will entertain fans who have cauldrons full of questions and inspire academics who have some positively troll-trapping theories to share. Anyone who wishes to deepen their knowledge of and appreciation for the Harry Potter novels, explore their influence on our culture, or simply bask in one of the largest and most influential fan followings ever assembled will find a home at Portus. By combining scintillating elements as delicately as if instructed by a Potions master - that is to say, the elements of a fan convention and an academic conference - Portus will offer an opportunity to investigate, deconstruct, discuss, and illustrate the brilliance of these literary marvels in the company of fellow enthusiasts. Set to the theme of the Department of Mysteries, Portus focuses on what’s behind the rotating doors as eager fans and scholars examine what has been hinted at and foreshadowed through symbolism and other means in the Harry Potter novels.

2. Where will Portus 2008 be held?

Seeing as everything is bigger in Texas, Muggle and magical, we're holding Portus in Dallas, Texas at the beautiful Hilton Anatole Dallas, located just north of downtown Dallas – nineteen miles from Dallas-Fort Worth International airport and four miles from Love Field. With the Cowboys on our side, any invading giants or trolls will surely keep well away!

3. What are the dates of Portus 2008?

Portus 2008 will begin the afternoon of Thursday, July 10 and will run through Sunday, July 13, 2008. All three days will be packed with activities, academic discussions, games, art displays, and more.

4. Who can attend Portus 2008?

Portus welcomes all intellectually apt and inquisitive Harry Potter fans, whether or not their beards yet reach the floor. There are certain restrictions for legal reasons, however. Anyone who has turned 18 as of July 10, 2008, is welcome to attend on their own. Anyone between the ages of 14 and 17 as of July 10, 2008, is welcome to attend with a registered parent or guardian, or a chaperone, provided that a parental permission slip appointing the chaperone has been signed and notarized. Like past HPEF symposia, Portus is a geared towards an adult audience, and parents should be advised that some programming may contain mature themes and language.

5. With whom is Portus 2008 associated?

Portus 2008 is an official HP Education Fanon, Inc. event. Neither HP Education Fanon, Inc., nor Portus 2008 has any other associations. Portus 2008 is not endorsed by J.K. Rowling, Warner Bros., or the Harry Potter book publishers.

6. How can I get involved?
