We are cousins Rich Bevan and Joshu Doherty, we are based in London, England, and Edinburgh, Scotland.
The story starts the same as so many others….we started writing together when we were teenagers, with a 4-track, some guitar pedals, a drum machine and a battered old synth. In 1999, we sent a demo to Skam Records with a note saying “will gig for vodka”. They offered us a gig supporting Altern 8, and a vinyl release heading up their new SMAK series… We’re still waiting for the vodka.
We moved to London in 2000 and founded Seed - a record label and a series of parties, aimed at showcasing up & coming artists, allowing them to grow (hence the name ‘Seed’), initially in the NuBar (sadly now a tacky cafe and luxury flats) in north London, and in various houses and warehouse spaces around the area
Taking breaks from chain-smoking rollies and writing music in a cramped cupboard in Hackney, we would head out and explore the back streets of London, becoming quite fascinated with the lost rivers and its buried history. Co-incidence and circumstance led us to hearing of an abandoned tube station in Aldwych, near The Strand, and upon meeting the curator, a man who had worked for London Underground for nearly 40 years, we persuaded him to allow us to hold a series of events. Between 2001 to 2004 we hosted a number of live extravaganzas there, featuring many of our musical heroes, influences, friends and contempories - including Plaid, Aphex Twin, Luke Vibert, showcases of labels such as Novamute, Skam, Warp, and many more.
Over the following years we continued to produce & play live as Posthuman, releasing several albums, a couple of EPs, throwing parties in a converted cinema and a prison, and playing live across Europe & the UK, including in a windmill, an iron mine, a boat, a farm that was burnt to the ground the same night, and all-weekend raves held in Pontins holiday camps…
Seed Records is still running, now under the stewardship of Bruce McClure, an old friend (that’s him dancing in the video above). Rich designs buildings, makes videos, and is pursuing a career in modern dance. Josh fixes computers, runs a clubnight, helped restart the legendary UK techno imprint B12, and now has a new record label - Balkan Vinyl.
We still write music together, and sometimes we even play it in front of people.
