...a band that has Kathleen Edwards and Beth Orton fronting Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, with guest appearances by Jack Johnson, Neil Young, Gram Parsons, John Doe, Warren Haynes, G. Love, Steve Earle, Joey Santiago, and Lucinda Williams.
Powderhouse is built upon the songwriting and vocals of Teresa Mastrorilli. Teresa had been writing songs for several years when she approached the rhythm section of Kevin Moylan and Ray Boyce (x-Returnables) at the end of 2006 to help record some of her material. At that time, Kevin and Ray were in a band called The New Thirty. The New Thirty had been playing around Boston for the past several years, releasing the CD "Racecar" on FOC Records as well as being selected to play the 2006 International Pop Overthrow Festival at The Paradise Lounge in Boston.
Kevin and Ray thought Teresa's songs were great, so they asked their friend Evan Appelbaum (who also plays with Kevin and Ray in a party band called Big Vise) to join them in the recording sessions. Things went so well that they decided to form a band.
"Powderhouse" played their debut gig to a packed house at P.A.’s Lounge in Somerville in May of 2007. Since then, the band has played very successful gigs at T.T. the Bear’s Place in Cambridge, Church in Boston, All Asia Bar in Cambridge, Bill’s Bar in Boston and Porters Bar in Boston. The band released a 9 song EP (taken from those initial recording sessions) on FOC Records in 2007.
After taking some time off this past winter to re-group and re-charge, Powderhouse invited keyboardist Art Daprato to join the band in early 2008. In addition, Fred Pickard (x-New Thirty, x-Returnables) recently came on board as lead guitarist (replacing Evan, who remains involved in recording). After successful gigs at T.T. the Bear's Place and Church earlier this year, Powderhouse was selected by music critic David Bash to play the Boston edition of the International Pop Overthrow Festival in November of 2009. The band is currently back in the studio working on new material, and is planning on more gigs in and around Boston during the coming year. A full-length CD release on FOC Records is planned for the winter of 2009/2010.
Powderhouse (alt. Powder-House, Powder House):
A place for storage of gunpowder, normally located (for obvious reasons) away from the center of a town, and usually constructed of masonry to keep it relatively free of fire hazard. The raid of the Boston garrison upon the Somerville powder-house predated the Revolutionary War. Powder-houses were constructed internally like Magazines. Many powder houses still exist in New England (eg at Concord and Plymouth, MA), and their traces can be escried in street names such as 'Powderhouse Blvd.' near Tufts University (where, it is rumored, several members of Powderhouse occasionally attended classes during breaks in their busy social calendars).
