About me: POW WOW started out as a Rock n' Roll Party held every Wednesday (and a few Thursdays) night at FELIX / SPY LOUNGE in Adams Morgan. Adam, Sara, and Kim DJ'd. Joe tended bar. People got drunk...and it was magical.
Pow Wow appeared monthly at the Rock and Roll Hotel.
KICKS! featuring Pow Wow's Kim and Sara, is now found monthly at the Black Cat Backstage. It's free. It rules.
PLEASE BE OUR MYSPACE FRIEND!!!!
Kim and Sara, who are not sisters - thanks for mentioning the resemblance though - co-pilot the rock and roll party KICKS!. What began as "Pow Wow," the brainchild of Adam (actual sibling to Sara who has left dirty DC for even dirtier LA), Pow Wow/KICKS! is a big old mess of garage rock, psych, 70s punk, powerpop, bubblegum, beat, shoegaze, the occasional classic rock or metal track, and whatever else we feel like playing through a Jameson haze.
From the Washington Post:
"Kicks is one of the more user-friendly DJ nights on the Black Cat's monthly calendar. From Queen to the Cold War Kids, Cheap Trick to the Vivian Girls, the Ramones to the Rolling Stones, it's a night of pure fun rock and roll, mainly from the '70s and '80s, that begs you to have a couple of beers and jump around on the backstage. Just when you think you're ready to leave, DJs Kim and Sara drop "Rebel Rebel" or "Teenage Kicks" and you find yourself saying, "Okay, one more song," and then the next thing you know the lights are coming up and it's time to go home, even though you meant to leave 45 minutes ago. Whoops."
Pow Wow/KICKS! promises awesome music that you won't hear much else of in DC, charmingly sloppy entertainment, special guest DJs, fucked-up movies, cool people, and drunken tomfoolery.
After a year at Felix/Spylounge, Pow Wow raised its ugly head once a month at the Rock and Roll Hotel, and various other DC haunts.
KICKS! is now found once a month at the Black Cat.
You may find yourself waking up in a gutter afterwards.
