Piper Perabo holds the singular distinction in Fredericton of being the only band to have played both a local strip club and a seniors’ retirement home, garnering remarkably similar reactions.

Drawing on influences like hillbilly, doo-wop, hair-metal, bubble gum, and minstrel, the band cops a trend like it cops a feel: lllllovingly but with eyes only for the next target. Sound-wise, imagine Ronny James Dio drinking spiked milkshakes with Cheap Trick out behind a malt shop when Britney Spears falls over them on her way out the back door to hurl. Britney purged and in tow, the gang stumbles over to a trailer Bob Dylan shares with Fred Astaire for purple monsters and a sing-along.

A Purple Monster is equal parts vodka, Redbull, and Nyquil. This is the lube that keeps PP’s V-12 purring like a love smitten jaguar. The music is toe-tapping, hip-shaking, head-banging, bender-friendly. The performances hyper literate, hyperventilated. The band is as at home in smoke-free bars filled with well-behaved scenesters as it is grandstanding nicotine- and cocktail-hazed bachelorette parties.
