THE EYES ARE THE WINDOWS TO THE SOUL
Praew Jik is the sound of dreaming. Like, sometimes when I wake up I can feel the dream I've just had, and I can see it in my mind in parts - a color, a shape - but I just can't put it into words. I wouldn't be able to write about it effectiviely, to put it into any kind of comprehensible order. Praew Jik is that same way. It's feeling, it's the subconcious as sounds.
At Cafe Bohemia in St. Pete on November 17th, Dustin, the man behind Praew Jik, invited members of his audience to shake themselves from the comfort of familiarity. We were asked to pair up with a stranger and stare deeply into their eyes for the duration of the set.
Participating in a thing like that takes courage. We were to not only leave the people we'd come with and approach a complete stranger, we had to open up our windows to these strangers and let them look around inside for an uncomfortably long amount of time. Most of the people there that night seemed reluctant to try, perhaps afraid to let other people look in. But why? Do we give away our deepest secrets that way? Maybe at one time human beings were able to communicate better without words - maybe with only a thought travelling from mind to mind through the eyes.
If we fear letting people in because it reminds us too much of a strange and secret knowledge that we as a people have somehow let ourselves abandon over time, then the pairing of the sounds of Praew Jik and this forced awkwardness makes perfect sense. The feelings aroused by both come from the same place - like waking up from a dream that you just can't quite describe - that feeling that you've maybe forgotten something very important. But you know that it's all still there inside the mind - it's all still in there somewhere. Dustin was inviting us to open the windows and share, to try to remember what it was like before we all forgot.
I sat under the Christmas lights on the patio at Cafe Bohemia with Mike / Breed The Circus and stared, as Praew Jik rumbled and soared, rattling those windows wide open. Mike's face was colors, colors - I forgot my own face and saw only his in my mind. I saw fire - was it an image he'd pulled up, pulled from me? Or was I pulling it from him? The lines blurred.
In the beginning I was not afraid but as we stared I felt a primal fear rise up. This was a feeling I'd forgotten, that had been handed down to me from ancestors long dead.
Once the fear subsided I breathed slowly and steadily, sending Mike a message - "Everything is okay. I know the secret now..."
