I was captivated by the story of Elizabeth Siddal. Lizzie was an artist’s model and appears in some of the most famous Pre-Raphaelite works. Not content to be merely a model, she boldly embarked on an art career of her own (in an age when such boldness in women was frowned upon). She later married PRB founder Dante Gabriel Rossetti. She died of an overdose of Laudanum. Several years after her death, Rossetti had her body exhumed in order to retrieve the manuscript of his poems that he had buried with her. My interest in her led me to create my website LizzieSiddal.com in 2004. Mainly because I was frustrated at the lack of information about Lizzie online at that time. Recently, I was thrilled to interview Lucinda Hawksley, author of Lizzie Siddal: Tragedy of a Pre-Raphaelite Supermodel. You can read the interview here.
Although Elizabeth Siddal was the catalyst, I became curious about the lives of other women of the Pre-Raphaelite Circle. As a modern female, I find it hard to imagine what it must have been like to live in the Victorian age. These women lived in a patriarchal society with limited choices and yet they have captivated me. And I am not alone. Numerous personal websites, myspace pages, livejournals, and more demonstrate a devotion to not only Pre-Raphaelite art, but the mystique of the Pre-Raphaelite woman. My goal for Pre-RaphaeliteSisterhood.com is to be a portal for those interested in the Pre-Raphaelite female. I share my own thoughts and research, but I also scour the web for the latest sites, videos, and blog posts related to our shared interests. I want to connect with others with a similar passion. This will be an ongoing project and I hope you will join me, because for many of us, well, in our hearts we are all Pre-Raphaelite Sisters.
