Mozart has the classic purity of light and the blue ocean; Beethoven the romantic grandeur which belongs to the storms of air and sea, and while the soul of Mozart seems to dwell on the ethereal peaks of Olympus, that of Beethoven climbs shuddering the storm-beaten sides of a Sinai. Blessed be they both! Each represents a moment of the ideal life, each does us good. Our love is due to both.

Science is supposed to be different from art, but when it comes to
bird songs it's conclusions seem strangely poetic. There are no answers
at the end of bird song papers, just further dreams and guesses as to
the elusive reasons why. It is no surprise to scientists at the summing-up
stage of their work often turn to poetry, from Garstan's light verse to
Skutche's yearning for a universal harmony that might hold the whole
wild universe together. The great whale scientists Roger Payne spent one
afternoon, listening to, Messiaen, humpback whale song, and bird songs,
and this led him into a swirling reverie in which sound, structure and
emotion coalesced " Is it possible that the universe sings?" this scientist
was not afraid to write " Is it possible that God is the song of the universe?"
Before we are artist or scientists we are human beings, and when we
confront phenomena as enigmatic and tenacious as bird song, no single
one of our facilities is enough. The beautiful songs of life are older then our
entire species, and they will continue long after all human music is dissolved.
If the works of God are to be heard on Earth, there is no better place to find
them than in the deep intricacies of incomprehensible bird song.
From "Why Birds Sing" by David Rothenberg
