Being a musician in the twenty-first century is both more accessible and harder than ever. With websites like Myspace and Youtube, artists have found ways to market their music to millions at virtually no cost and the proliferation of digital downloads have enabled bands to be the distributor of their own recordings. While these methods are proving more and more favorable, the flood of rockstar hopefuls has made it even more difficult to stand out. With a focus on today’s music industry, Art Director/multi-media artist Karen Keith created PressJunk; A major label quality art department geared towards the specific needs of the independent artist.
Working alongside some of the city's most innovative photographers, Karen established herself as a do-it-all talent with an unique eye for color and texture. Her makeup art and styling has appeared in publications such as Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, Harpers Bazaar, InStyle, Heeb and NY Times. Karen has also worked as a stylist on various reality TV shows and was a featured platform artist for workshops and seminars around the country. While solidifying her name as one of New York's most dynamic triple threats (hair, makeup, styling), Karen was also practicing another art: photography. In musicians, Karen found what she sites as her ideal subject: passionate, intense, and moving. To put the experience in the artist's own words: "I have always loved music, but capturing the physical manifestations of the art and giving it another dimension was intoxicating."
She proceeded to focus almost exclusively on shooting bands and musicians, as well as utilizing her significant skills as a digital artist to design posters, logos and album covers, including an impressionist painting of jazz guitar legend Larry Corriel and the acclaimed cover artwork for singer-songwriter Jacob Miller's debut LP. In the summer of 2008, Karen Keith conceived of an idea for a company that would become PressJunk. "For me, one medium always seemed to lead to another and I get such joy out of the whole process. I wanted to create a service like that of the traditional record label art department. Because for the independent musician, sub-contracting the many jobs necessary for a successful marketing campain can be very expensive and difficult to manage. PressJunk does everything, so it's easier for the band and more fun for me."
