"Gritty, absorbing, and wonderfully written. Easily one of the best thrillers of the year."
--J.A. Konrath, (Author of the Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels series)
"A blend of horror, Eastern philosophy, Spec Ops thriller, and virus white-knuckler, The Pressure of Darkness keeps the pages turning as fast as your hands can move. Strap in and read fast, or this one'll leave without you."
--Gregg Hurwitz (Author of the Tim Rackley series)
...In this fast paced, genre-bending adventure, best-selling author Peter Stryker is found in a locked suite after what the police describe as a night of ‘self-mutilation.' According to their report, Stryker laid out medical instruments, filleted his own flesh, and cauterized each wound unto death.
Would a man commit suicide by butchering his own body?
Stryker's daughter Nicole does not accept the theory. "My father was terrified of death," she tells PI Jack Burke. "I want to know what happened in that hotel room. And why." Burke, who is working both sides of the law to pay his wife's mounting medical bills, involves the surviving members of the Delta team that served with him in Somalia--Detective Scotty Bowden, who stepped over that thin blue line to go on the take, and wheelchair-bound Coroner Doc Washington, crippled during their final mission, who is losing a battle with painkillers.
Jack Burke rekindles a passionate love affair with another man's wife. Meanwhile the violent, bloody, and very complex investigation leads him deep into corruption and conspiracy, facing both a vicious drug lord out to settle old scores and an evil cult whose leader seeks to destroy this world, and create the next, by unleashing a deadly new virus.
One final mission, one last chance for redemption...
“If Michael Herr, David Morrell and Robert Stone wrote a book together, this would be it. ‘The Pressure of Darkness’ is a tremendous novel that works on every level.”
--Ken Bruen (Author of "The Guards" and "The Dramatist")
"There is such a thing as the pressure of darkness."
Victor Hugo

Here's what people are saying about my novella, Monkey Love:
"John Paul Allen delivers well-drawn characters and emotional dynamite in this tale of dark suspense" - Scott Nicholson, author of They Hunger.
"One sadistic piece of work by one of the most talented new voices in dark fiction." - Karen Koehler, author of the Slayer series.
"Disturbing and intense, this story is a one-sit read that races, carrying you along to grim, uncharted terrain." - Lee Thomas, Bram Stoker Award-Winning author of Stained, Parish Damned and The Dust of Wonderland.
"From the first page, Monkey Love draws you into a surreal world that teeters on a disturbing balance of madness, eroticism, and obsession." David Niall Wilson, author of Deep Blue and Ancient Eyes.
"It's a wild ride, and I loved it from first page to last." - John R. Little, author of The Memory Tree and Placeholders.
"Exquisitely well-written, more than slightly twisted and compelling erotica for all horror readers." T.M. Wright, author of the forthcoming Bone Soup and Blue Canoe.
"Monkey Love is my first read by John Paul Allen and I can promise it won't be the last. Touching, peverse, oddly poignant and riddled with interesting questions about the nature of love and obsession, I can't recommend it enough. Monkey Love is the sort of tale that pushes the boundaries of comfortable and makes us question our own morals." - James A. Moore, author of Deeper and Blood Red.
