Puerto Rico's Traditions
Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance performing company presents....
Bailes de las Montañas (Seis)
Seis was the principal musical expression of the Jíbaro, the humble and hardworking mountain people who worked the coffee planations and inland farms of Puerto Rico in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Bomba
Bomba is a musical expression created in Puerto Rico at the end of the 17th century which flourished along the coast of Puerto Rico where West Africans and their descendants worked the colonial sugar canes.
Plena
Plena, born in the working class barrios of Ponce about 100 years ago, was known as "el periodico cantado" (the sung newspaper) because it contained stories about the everyday life of the people.
Bailes de Salon (Danza)
Danza, a musical form created in Puerto Rico, is one of our "Bailes de Salon" which flourished in the second part of the 19th century in the salons of elite, agricultural landowners (hacendados) with cultural ties to Spain, and was later adopted by all, merchants and peasants alike.
Puerto Rico's Primera Raiz
We, the Taino are still here.
We are the descendants of the native people that Christopher Columbus encountered on his first voyage to the Americas.

The Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance & Cultural Center
is one of four active cultural centers on the mainland US affiliated with the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture for our offering of authentic, high-quality cultural programing. Founded in 1997, our nonprofit (501C3) has created a cultural anchor in the Southwest United States for Puerto Rico as one of the few cultural centers in the country, and the only in all of Texas and our four surrounding states, offering ongoing performance and educational programs in the full cross-section of traditional dance, music and culture for children through adults, as well as a professional-level performing company under one roof. Our achievement and quality has been validated by repeat support by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Texas Commission on the Arts, the City of Austin through the Cultural Arts Division, the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, and others.
Our cultural center is home to Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance our professional-level performing company of dancers and musicians, as well as our PRFDance Youth Performing Company, who perform at cultural events throughout the year. Trained by the masters on the Island, we are one of the few on the mainland US with the expertise to teach and perform the full cross-section of folklore from Puerto Rico -- Bomba, Plena, Seis, and Danza -- to children through adults, beginners through professional level.
Our website receives over 2,000 visitors each week from around the world and is providing a valuable resource on the music, dance, and history of our culture to educators, students, and the world-wide-web community.
The Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance & Cultural Center
is dedicated to those who come seeking a world-class education in culture and folklore, who wish to discover and celebrate their identity, who yearn to become connected to a community, who will inspire and be inspired by role models, mentors and friends, and who, inside our walls, find a sense of pride and a dream for the future.
Visit our website for information on Puerto Rico's cultural traditions, upcoming performances, and classes in traditional dance, music and percussion for all ages.

12th Anniversary Birthday
Performance & Celebration
Sept. 13th, 2009, 2-5pm
We will be celebrating PRFDance's 12th Anniversary, birthday style with cake and candles, and performances of music and dance by our company and performing arts students. Our celebration will feature a "Bombazo" (Bomba Dance) as well as a Taino Areyto (native dance), two Puerto Rican traditions that invite the community to sing and dance with us before the drums! Bring your card tables, lawn chairs, dominoes and briscas, and come play with new friends on our big, tree covered lawn. This event will take place at our cultural center and will be FREE and open to the public.
PRFDance Performing Company Auditions - Dancers/Actors/Musicians
Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance is a multi-generational performing company bonded
together like a family. We are always interested in hearing from Dancers,
Actors, and Musicians who are interested in our Adult and Junior Companies, to share the joy and
liveliness of the Puerto Rican people, and the color and richness of our beautiful
heritage throughout the year.
Professional-Level Company - Dance & Music Auditions
DANCERS & ACTORS: This year we are looking for entry-level adults, males and
females, who are passionate about dancing and/or acting and wish to be trained for
membership in our company. Candidates must possess outstanding raw-dance talent
and/or natural acting-ability, and a vibrant stage presence. Previous knowledge of
a latin/folkloric dance style and formal acting skills helpful but not necessary.
If you like to dance and sing and act, all at the same time, you will especially
enjoy our company as our performances use music and dance to tell stories based in
our cultural heritage.
MUSICIANS: Auditions for our Professional Music Ensemble are open to advanced and
professional-level musicians. As Puerto Rican music is very diverse, we are always
interested in adding singers of any style, and instruments of almost any kind
including accoustic guitars, cuatro and accordian players, large and small
percussion, strings, horns, winds, and more! As segments of Puerto Rico's
traditional music are not in written form, musicians should have a proficiency for
both playing music in written form and playing by ear. Musicians in our program
enjoy challenging themselves as artists and developing new skills. Those who play
multiple instruments have added fun!
Youth Performing Company - Dance & Music Auditions
PRFDance's Youth Company is the training ground for our adult professional-level
performing company.
DANCERS: PRFDance is holding auditions for advanced youth dancers interested in
being trained to perform with our Youth Performing Company. This fast-paced dance
program is targeted for advanced youth who are ready to mature their dance-skills
towards a level expected of our Professional Company, and gain exciting performance
experience beyond an annual recital. Natural acting ability a plus!
MUSIC: If your child plays an instrument very advanced for his/her years,
this program gives a unique opportunity to learn to play traditional ensemble music,
Puerto Rican compositions performed with our professional-level musicians.
Note: as segments of Puerto Rico's traditional music are not in written form,
this program will develop his/her talent for playing music by ear.
See our website for more information: http://www.prfdance.org/auditions.htm

towards full-length, traditional-dance choreographies. These bilingual
classes include age-appropriate lessons on culture, history, games and songs
to enhance the appreciation of Puerto Rican culture.
COQUIS & FAMILY - "Brinca y Canta" Class (0-4yrs w/adult)
Maybe we should list this class as "Adults bring your favorite child!"
After one semester we are discovering that parents are having as much fun as
the kids in this program for young children (0-4 years) and their favorite
adult (parent, grandparent, etc). This class teaches early childhood music
including traditional children's songs in Spanish (canciones infantiles),
basic rhythm and creative movement, and traditional childhood games from
Puerto Rico (juegos infantiles) in a family-style, mixed-age class based in
our cultural traditions.
PERCUSSION CLASS -- Percussion class for beginner/intermediates (age 10+)
teaches traditional rhythms from Puerto Rico, such as Bomba and
Plena, as well as other afro-caribbean percussive rhythms relevant to our
culture. Instruments taught include barriles, panderos, and small percussion.
YOUTH CHOIR -- This program teaches traditional and popular Puerto Rican
compositions, including Canciones Infantiles (traditional children's songs)
to youth of all ages. It is a joyful way to practice or learn spanish!
Semester-end Recital is with live musical accompaniment.

traditional and popular Puerto Rican compositions and authentic orchestration
to those with an intermediate to professional-level proficiency in their
