A career in audio production that has spanned 20 years and includes 4 ARIA nominations for Best Producer and Engineer as well holding the enviable title of producing and engineering the highest selling independent album (at the time) in Australian history - The Whitlams 'Eternal nightcap'.
Rob's foray into audio production began in Newcastle in the early eighties. After completing a Visual Arts degree at Newcastle University, Rob became one of the prime 'new music' producers at the Universities community radio station 2NUR-FM. In one year he produced and engineered 21 live to air presentations of local bands, earning him an award for 'special contribution' at the Newcastle independent Music Awards in 1988. A HiFi FM Award followed for the production of a documentary on youth homelessness that was aired nationally on the ABC radio network.
By 1989, Rob had moved exclusively into the field of music production and engineering. Over a ten year period, Rob worked with a 'who's who' of Australian artists, culminating in a successful production partnership with Tim Freedman and The Whitlams. The single 'No Aphrodesiac' was groundbreaking for the band, reaching the No1 position on the Triple J Hottest 100, propelling them to the status of the biggest act in Australia at the time. Winning the ARIA for Best Group in 1998, was confirmation.
From assistant engineer at studios all over Sydney, to Chief engineer at Alberts (1997-2000), and then Mangrove Studios (2001), Rob's technical excellence and experience is world class. As a recording engineer, programmer and music producer he has worked with some of the biggest names in Australian music, including studio, television and radio performances and productions. International artist Jimmy Sommerville quoted Rob as having engineered the 'best vocal sound in my career'.
In 2002 Rob embarked on a new phaze of his career as 'independent producer' resulting in presently running his own 'cottage industry' studio, label and music production company 'Prick Up Your Ears'. 'Celebrity Drug Disasters' (with long-time collaborator Sean Lowry - Def FX), and a dance/remix partnership with DJ Alex Taylor became the initial focus with a publishing deal signed in 2005 to Shock music publishing Australia. The partnership with Alex Taylor (’Taylor square’) had countless top 20 club charts tracks, including a remix for American diva Aniah Day, reaching 3 and staying there for 7 weeks.
2007 saw an invitation to work in Seoul, Korea at a major audio facility (Aim entertainment) part of an ‘overseas’ mixing and mastering team including Jonathan Wyner from Boston USA, and Cem Oral from Berlin Germany. Rob’s reputation has grown rapidly in Korea during the many visits to being a top level engineer, mixing and mastering many top 5 Korean acts.
Rob's main area of expertise and enthusiasm is working with new, young and talented bands. His ability to help them develop their own recording and music skills, and help them understand and fully utilise the recording process is a proven entity as seen with his 10 year working relationships with The Whitlams. "It's all about getting the most out of the process and not letting it kill the creative energy!"
Currently Rob is in-house producer/engineer, and part of the in-house writing team with Sean Lowry at FLASHPOINT MUSIC.
Dave is considered a 'legend' in live audio production with an international reputation and a who's who list of past and present clientelle. Dave is a consumate expert in live sound design and production, with experience to major event level, including logistical management and design of live recordings by Elton John and Kylie Minogue.
At the age of 14, Dave was already behind a mixing console and studying music extensively. He then studied Communications at Newcastle Uni before going off on the road to learn the craft of live engineering. Within a short space of time Dave was being recognised as a leading figure within the live music community, embarking on a 3 year relationship with DefFX, that included a 24,000 mile US tour. Following this a 7 year stint with the Screaming Jets, joining them at their peak when the band was going through the roof and had a No1 single. As a freelance engineer, Dave also mixed for many top Australian and international acts. Gina Jeffries, Richard Clapton, Grinspoon, Suzi Quatro, Song Birds, The Cassanovas, The Flood, Don Walker, Beccie Cole, Superjesus and INXS, just to name a few.
His career has also encompassed studio production and management, that has seen him work with some major names in Australian music. In the studio Dave has had some incredible success that includes Regurgitator 'Track 1' produced and engineered by dave which spent a remarkable 72 weeks in the independent top 10 charts. Other credits include The Gadflies, The Jets, Def FX, The Porkers, The Gadflies, The Healing Art and many others. A continuing role in studio management has been pivotal in the link between the two worlds of live and studio production, highlighted by a 15 year partnership with Rob Taylor that is the history of 48volt studio.

we are definitely going to look into getting a live engineer. too much is left to chance otherwise and songs just sound better when the engineer is familiar with the arrangements.
thanks again for coming out - it was a fun night. it's the first time that i've seen that side of the morning in a while - good times.
