About me:

Inspired by an unbelievable true story of four lions who escaped the Baghdad Zoo during Operation Iraqi Freedom, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD is equal parts anthropomorphic adventure and Animal Farm-like parable about the ongoing conflict. Written by Y: THE LAST MAN and EX MACHINA co-creator Brian K. Vaughan and lavishly illustrated by artist Niko Henrichon, this 136-page original graphic novel will be released on September 13, 2006 by Vertigo Comics.

Please support your local comic-book retailer by advance ordering a copy today. To find the nearest specialty shop in your area, please call: 1-888-COMIC BOOK. Otherwise, you should be able to find Pride of Baghdad in all major bookstores, or online at Amazon.com.
Who I'd like to meet:
Welcome to all of our new friends! If this is your first foray into the world of graphic novels, you can find out more about the author of Pride of Baghdad and some of his other comics (Y: THE LAST MAN, EX MACHINA, RUNAWAYS, etc.) by adding his personal MySpace page today: http://www.myspace.com/briankvaughan

You can also read more about Pride of Baghdad in these interviews with WIZARD MAGAZINE and PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, which recently gave Pride of Baghdad this Starred Review:

"This story of a pride of lions that escape from the Baghdad zoo during Operation Iraqi Freedom bombing is simple, lavishly drawn and devastating. The four lions—Zill; his two wives, the young, ideological and passionate Noor and the older, more cautious Safa; and his son, Ali—must negotiate life outside their pen. The insanity of war and of Saddam's state comes out in Henrichon's stunning images, which can move seamlessly from earth-rocking video game to a grieving peaceable kingdom. A turtle mourning his dead family notes that the local humans called their tanks "the lions of Babylon," and then the tanks rush in. Later, an image of Safa facing a portrait of a winged lion backed by lightning is startling, as she wanders the splendor of an abandoned palace in wonder. Without taking sides, Vaughan has his marvelously imagined characters debate the concept of freedom versus desire for safety, and fills the animal conflicts between lions, antelopes and monkeys with all-too-human tropes of honor and betrayal. PRIDE parodies the surrealism of war, with bewildered yet realistic animals among the ruined, megalomaniacal monuments of Baghdad—and the total effect is memorable. (Sept.) *Starred Review"

Pride of Baghdad was also a recommended read in the new issue of GQ MAGAZINE, and on NPR's TALK OF THE NATION, host Neal Conan included Pride in his "Summer Reading Picks," right up there with The Collected Poems of Stanley Kunitz and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch by Philip K. Dick.

Finally got a copy from the library so I finally read it! Don't worry, I did buy a copy, but being a crazy comic geek I wouldn't open the shrinkwrap! Anyhoo, Read it and loved it. The writing was top-notch, and the art was beautiful. I'll re-read it many times before its due date! lol

Pride of Baghdad is so touching..best Christmas present ever!!! :) I love it, absolute masterpiece. Beautifully illustrated. As an Illustrator myself I am so inspired by your work. I can only imagine how many days worth of referencing it took to master the art of illustrating these gorgeous setting and creatures going about their natural behaviors. Beautiful beautiful BEAUTIFUL!!!! Thank you for such an amazing piece of graphic literature.

Great job on being too good to wait for the paperback. And also the colouring in you in unbelievable. Don't get me wrong. You are filled with well drawn, pretty pictures. But it's rare to see a total art package like this.

Just a real thank you for having produced such a nice nice book.

I'm already praising Brian on his page, so let me say how much I enjoyed Niko Henrichon art, that I didnt knew before. The dynamics, the backgrounds, the expressions of the animals, and the astonishing views and various double page, make it a book to cherish.

One thing though - why the Vertigo thing ?? Ok, it is bloody violent, well animalistic violent though, things that you can see on tv; but it is definetly a children book - at least, I would see it this way in Europe.

Thanks for this anyway, may DC produce more books of this quality in the future.
