Jovan Balov, Macedonian artist, gallery owner and curator, lives and works in Berlin since 1995. By organizing cultural programmes, he presented international artists, mainly from the Balkans, to the Berlin audience, as well as artists of many nationalities living in Germany to the Macedonian audience. His longtime work for the transborder promotion of culture of the Balkans was regarded with the prestigious cultural prize "Rigas Charter" in Athens in 2007. Jovan Balov is the founder of Prima Center Berlin: project spaces in which artists have the opportunity to present their works to the public. Additionally, Prima Center support these exhibitions in their conception as well as in public relations. The first Prima Center was opened in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia, in 2001. The second opened in Berlin in 2004. Both Prima Center are meeting places and free places for artists, art critics and curators. Visual arts, readings, performances, video presentations - Prima Center not only build bridges between nations, but also stand for a platform of various artistic forms of expression. The common denominator of the works of art exhibited is the examination of our present with artistic means. Prima Center Berlin is involved in the "Kolonie Wedding", which is a group of 30 visual artists in Berlin-Wedding, a Berlin district influenced by high unemployment and a high proportion of immigrants. Since 2002, "⁋olonie Wedding" is organizing monthly exhibitions of the participating artists, which are heavily advertised and have become an integral part of Berlin's cultural scene. The establishment of the Prima Center Berlin in Wedding is by no means accidental, but follows the notion that art has to be socializing. In addition to the "Kolonie Wedding", further cooperation partners are the Ministry of Culture, Republic of Macedonia, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the State Museum of Skopje, Gallery MC - New York, the galleries Uluv and KCNS, both in Novi Sad, Serbia, and several galleries in Berlin.

Jovan Balov, mazedonischer Künstler arbeitet nach Stationen in Skopje und Amsterdam bereits seit 1995 in Berlin. Mit den von ihm organisierten Kulturprogrammen hat er internationale Künstler, vorwiegend aus den Balkanländern, dem Berliner Publikum, ebenso wie in Deutschland lebende Künstler vieler Nationalitäten dem mazedonischen Publikum vorgestellt. Seine langjährige Arbeit für die grenzenüberschreitende Förderung der Kultur des Balkan wurde in diesem Jahr in Athen mit dem renommierten Kulturpreis "Rigas Charta" gewürdigt. Jovan Balov eröffnete 2001 in Skopje, 2004 zusätzlich in Berlin Prima Center, Projekträume, die Künstlern neben der Ausstellungsfläche auch Unterstützung bei Ausstellungskonzeption und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit bieten. Darüber hinaus handelt es sich bei Prima Center um Treffpunkte und freie Orte für Künstler, Kunstkritiker oder Kuratoren, die hier ihre Arbeiten, Ausstellungen und Konzepte vorstellen. Bildende Kunst, Lesungen, Performances, Videovorstellungen – Prima Center verstehen sich nicht nur als Brücken zwischen Nationen, sondern auch als Plattform verschiedenster künstlerischer Ausdrucksformen. Ihren gemeinsamen Nenner finden die gezeigten Werke in ihrer Zielsetzung, sich mit künstlerischen Mitteln mit der Gegenwart, mit ihren Missständen und Ungerechtigkeiten auseinanderzusetzen. Das Prima Center Berlin ist mit seinen Ausstellungen in die „Kolonie Wedding“ eingebunden, einen Zusammenschluß bildender Künstler in einem Berliner Bezirk, der durch hohe Arbeitslosigkeit und einen hohen Anteil an Migranten geprägt ist. Die Ansiedlung in diesem Gebiet ist dabei keineswegs zufällig, sondern folgt der Vorstellung, dass Kunst sich sozialisieren soll. Aufgrund seiner gemeinnützig orientierten Zielsetzung wird die Rechtsform des Prima Center Berlin kurzfristig in die eines eingetragenen Vereins umgewandelt. . . . Birgit Thomsmeier
