When Canadian songsmiths, The Prince Brothers wrote 'From This Place' (the song), for nothing more than a musical experimentation 4 years ago, they couldn't have known how the song would eventually take on a whole new meaning in their life just a few years down the road. After hosting a weekly residency gig at The Cameron House in Toronto from 2007-2009, playing upwards of 75 shows, various collaborations with artists and musicians alike, left the brothers in a reality that would prove to be both chaotic and cool. This ultimately becoming the inspiration behind their most musically diverse and textured album to date, 'From This Place'.
Accomplished multi-instrumentalists, songwriters, and singers - The Prince Brothers quickly found themselves immersed in a creative spirit of interpretation and collaboration. From This Place was recorded over 2 days at The Cameron House with engineer Frank Nevada, piano player Ben Kobayashi and bassist Chris Osti. Further arrangements and production were completed at brother Bryan's home studio 'Chateauneuf du Pape'. Mixing sessions proceeded at 'Box Office Poison' with multi-Juno-award winner producer/engineer, Michael Phillip Wojewoda. "The arrangements became a big part of it," Eric Prince recalls. "We ended up playing almost everything ourselves, with the exception of our special guests parts." The album features Bryan Prince playing all drums, percussion, horns, organs, harmonica, acoustic guitar, fuzz bass and 'de-tuned' piano while brother Eric plays electric and acoustic guitars, banjo and guitalele...with the brotherly harmonies resonating throughout. The special guests list prides itself in family and friends including, Juno-award winner Melanie Doane on fiddle, acclaimed guitar player David Paoli, flute solo on 'Any Longer' by Liz Samson and keeping it in the family with cellist, Laurie Prince.
This, their latest album in a career spanning more than 10 years, 'From This Place' - a collection of songs with an earthy feel, as if it was born on a crystal lake north of Huntsville and fed on blossoms and ladybugs, until it developed into something beautiful. "These tunes hit a chorus with the best of them" says Michael Wojewoda. From the alternative/rock groove of the title track to the dreamlike landscapes of 'Take That Away' and 'Happy Days', 'From This Place' plays out like a homage to the great raw and organic records of decades past, while still maintaining its easy listening appeal.
The products of a musical family, Toronto-born Prince Brothers have spent a large portion of the last 10 years supporting their numerous albums and EP's. Their indie release 'Sunnyday' gained the attention of Page/EMI Canada in 2001 and they later released 'The Dwight Album' on Canadian online label Zunior. Both albums received critical praise and garnered a loyal following. What followed is nothing short of extraordinary - regular college radio rotation, touring in the US and shows with the likes of The Barenaked Ladies, The Trews, Kevin Hearn and Thinbuckle, The Flashing Lights, The Pocket Dwellers, and The Northern Pikes. Changing band members and states of the industry left The Prince Brothers in the position to pursue their career independently.
Although The Prince Brothers are the only two biologically related, the other members: Chris Osti, Ben Kobayahi and newcomer David Paoli are brothers in spirit as collectively they have come together as one sonic musical force. A longtime coming this line-up of talent, as members have been in and out of different bands respectively in Toronto for many years.
Enter 2009, The Prince Brothers new album, 'From This Place' is complete. Here, the listener will find a place he/she will not want to leave.
