About me:

The New Wellness Revolution has been published in 24 languages and affected tens of millions of lives worldwide. Yet as an author, and as a Jew, I am perhaps most proud of this new edition in Hebrew. In the first half of the 20th century, my parents and relatives left Eastern Europe and emigrated to the United States for a better material life. In the second half of the 20th century, many of my relatives left the United States and emigrated to Israel for a better spiritual life. Today, the people of Israel, like the people of many other developed nations, have both the better material life and the better spiritual life they or their parents sought. Yet something today is of even great concern than just making money or having the right to pray. Despite what you see on the evening news, the number one daily concern of most people in developed nations is not the economy, terrorism, or war. Their number one daily concern is their health or the health of a loved one—health that has been ruined by decades of bad choices when it comes to their wellness. I was raised in a Jewish family that blindly observed religious dietary laws and gave thanks during mealtime for the physical food we ate. It wasn’t until years later, when I started spending time in Israel, that I came to understand what I had misunderstood growing up. To my observant Israeli relatives, the requirement to eat only the foods prescribed by biblical law is not seen as deprivation, but as one of God’s greatest gifts. They thank God for this knowledge in prayers before and after every meal. For them, eating kosher food is one of life’s greatest mitzvahs (good deeds). Today, when I sit down with my wife and four children to pray during mealtime, we no longer thank God just for just the food itself as I was taught by my parents. We thank God for the knowledge of what foods, supplements, and activities are healthy. More importantly, we ask God for the inner strength to make only healthy choices when it comes to our wellness. On Shabbat, we speak aloud how God paused on the seventh day of creation, looked at His handiwork, and saw that it was good. Then we speak about how we are pausing now on this seventh day of our week of creating our lives, looking at our handiwork, and affirming how we can do even better next week—starting with our wellness. On Passover, we speak about what it must be like to have been a slave, unable to make your own choices. Then we speak about how many people today, starting with their own diet and lack of exercise, or addictions to cigarettes and drugs, are still slaves to their physical desires. Moving forward, we ask God for the inner strength to make the correct choices when it comes to our wellness. Many people wrongly imagine that a wellness lifestyle involves constantly saying no to things they enjoy. But wellness oriented individuals have learned to cherish and appreciate God for their knowledge of how to take care of themselves. Through the small and reasonable disciplines of daily eating, a wellness-oriented individual, an orthodox Jew, and a practicing Muslim all experience a sense of distinction, specialness, and closeness to God. It is thus with great pride, and great awe, that I present to you the Hebrew edition of The New Wellness Revolution. I am hoping that the publication of this Hebrew edition begins a new chapter in the history of wellness—for both wellness customers and for wellness entrepreneurs—a chapter of combining the spread of wellness with religious faith. Religious faith is the highest motivating force in the world. Wellness entrepreneurs can combine their religion with their wellness business—motivating their customers through faith to adopt and stick to a wellness lifestyle of eating healthy foods and performing regular exercise.
